Learn how to defeat Bluto, Buzz, Crawdad King, Sleepy Head, and Spike in Spyro: Year of the Dragon with this boss guide.

Bluto

Found: At top of second large underwater area, Seashell Shore.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Enter the area and immediately move away from Bluto as he will chase and bite you.
  2. 2
Pick up missiles if desired and fire as many as possible at Bluto's shark sub. His sub will flash red with each hit, and he will lose a hitpoint.
  3. 3
If Bluto fires homing missiles, corner them or use turbo to evade.
  4. 4
After approximately 15 shots, Bluto will begin repairing his sub. This is an opportune moment to defeat him. He has 20 hitpoints initially, plus 5 he adds back on.

Buzz

Found: Buzz's Dungeon.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Buzz will immediately charge at you. To counter this, charge at Buzz yourself; you will both be knocked back slightly.
  2. 2
Immediately charge at him again. Continue charging him backwards until he falls into the lava. Sheila will then stomp him, removing one hitpoint.
  3. 3
Buzz will jump out of the lava and begin rolling at you. Charge away from him to avoid being squashed. Repeat this process.
  4. 4
Buzz will then occasionally generate a fire shield while rolling. Avoid touching him during this phase. Repeat the charging process.
  5. 5
Next, Buzz will occasionally sneeze fire shockwaves. You can jump over these or charge him during this phase. Repeat the charging process until Buzz is defeated.

Crawdad King

Found: At the end, Crawdad Farm.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Strafe up and down while continuously shooting. His initial attack is fireballs from his mouth. Keep strafing and shooting to evade all fireballs, and aim your shots at him during his turns. Approximately 25 shots will break his mouth.
  2. 2
His next attack involves firing homing rockets from his claws, two at a time. Continue strafing and shooting to destroy all rockets, and aim at him during his turns. Approximately 50 shots will destroy his claws.
  3. 3
The Crawdad King will then exhibit a cold, firing firewaves from his nose. This is similar to avoiding the fireballs, but you will need to take earlier turns. After approximately 25 more shots, the Crawdad King will explode.

Sleepy Head

Found: Just past round the corner at the end, Spooky Swamp.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
When Sleepy Head creates swirly green puffs of magic, take (cover (press the cover button to crouch behind walls or objects)) or defeat the gators that emerge.
  2. 2
He will throw a giant bomb. Do not stay next to the bomb for too long due to its five-second countdown. Charge the bomb and aim it at Sleepy Head. If it hits him directly, his health bar will decrease significantly.
  3. 3
Hit him a total of 4 times with the bomb for victory.

Spike

Found: Spike's Arena.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
For most of the battle, charge around Spike to avoid his bullet(s) (1 shot on Easy Mode, 2 shots on Hard Mode).
  2. 2
Sgt. Byrd will drop giant red lava rocks. Let Spike shoot, then quickly line up the rock with him and charge it. This depletes one hitpoint. Repeat this twice more.
  3. 3
Spike will jump, and cracks will appear in the floor upon landing. Be cautious when charging away from Spike's shots here, as flames will randomly burst from the cracks (2 shots on Easy Mode, 3 shots on Hard Mode).
  4. 4
The lava rocks will be replaced with red mines. Walk into one to pick it up and fire it with the O Button to release a superflame blast (a wavy line of fire). Spike can also pick these up and use them as a single fire shockwave. Hit Spike with the wavy-flame to deplete his health. Repeat twice more.
  5. 5
Spike's shots will increase again (3 shots on Easy Mode, 4 shots on Hard Mode), and the mines will turn blue. When fired, these blue mines will spin and slightly home in on Spike. He can also use them as a line of electricity.
