Walkthrough

    For most of the battle, charge around Spike to avoid his shots (1 shot on Easy Mode, 2 shots on Hard Mode).

    When Sgt. Byrd drops giant red lava rocks, let Spike shoot, then line up a rock with him and charge it to deplete one hitpoint.

    Repeat step 2 twice more.

    After Spike jumps and lands, cracks will appear in the floor. Be careful when charging from Spike's shots here, as flames will randomly burst from the cracks (Easy Mode = 2 shots, Hard Mode = 3 shots).

    The lava rocks will be replaced with red mines. Walk into one to pick it up and fire it with the O Button to release a superflame blast.

    Hit Spike with the wavy-flame to deplete his health. Repeat twice more.

    Spike's shots will increase again (Easy Mode = 3 shots, Hard Mode = 4 shots), and the mines change to blue. Fire a blue mine; it spins and slightly homes in on Spike.

    Hit Spike with two blue mines to win the battle.
Tips
  • Be aware that Spike can also pick up the mines and use them as a single fire shockwave, and you can use the blue mines as a line of electricity that chases him.
  • More cracks will appear in the ground during the blue mine phase.
