Detailed guide to Painkiller's pickups: gold trinkets, holy relics, ammo, souls for health and demon morph, health packs, armor, and Quad Damage power-ups. Learn about hazards like fire, explosions, rubble, and mechanisms.

Pickups:

Gold Trinkets: Found lying around or dropped by enemies. They look like gold circlets or bangles and are worth 20 gold each. A pickup will display '+20' or similar in the stats window.

Holy Items: Always hidden in secret areas, shaped as crucifixes or cups, and glow golden. Each grants 100 gold upon pickup.

Ammo: Boxes for all weapons except the Painkiller. Megapacks provide small amounts of ammo for all weapons. See section 2.3.1 for more details.

Souls:

  • Green Souls: Dropped by most killable minions. Each boosts health by 1 point. They can increase health beyond the base limit. Disappear after a few seconds.
  • Red Souls: Dropped by specific monsters (lepper monks, executioners, skulls, minibosses). Grant an extra 6 health points.

Collecting 66 souls allows you to Morph into a Demon (see section 2.3.1).

Health:

  • Swirling Ball of Pale Gold: Provides a moderate health boost up to the base level.
  • Super-Health: A swirl of green and red. Grants 100 health, up to a maximum of 250.

Armour:

  • Light Armour: Sets armour rating to 100.
  • Medium Armour: Sets armour rating to 150.
  • Heavy Armour: Sets armour rating to 200.

It's more efficient to pick up armour/health when needed, rather than wasting higher-tier pickups.

Quad Damage: A rare power-up appearing in later levels. Shaped like a skeleton helmet with glowing eyes. It quadruples damage dealt for about thirty seconds, indicated by a red border around the HUD.

  • Effects: Stakes fire straight, shotgun blasts are narrower, shurikens gain an explosive component.
  • Weapon Specifics:
    • Painkiller: Energy beam allows a wider aiming angle (approx. 70 degrees off).
    • Chaingun / Rocket Launcher: Rockets travel ~1.5x faster.
    • Electro Driver: Electroburst special attack uses 75 electricity and no shurikens; best used on the ground or walls.
    • Grenade Launcher: Shoots incendiary grenades.

Hazards:

Fire: Varies in danger. Some fire is harmless (torches), some causes gradual damage (molotov cocktails), and some causes immediate death (exploding tank flames). Avoid fire, but baiting enemies into it can be strategic.

Explosions: Caused by shooting barrels, ammo boxes, gas tanks, etc. Avoid proximity to these. Exploding objects often drop gold, and some are necessary for level progression.

Rubble: Falling rocks, pillars, and masonry. Avoid them, as they cause damage. Bosses often use rubble.

Mechanisms: Found occasionally, primarily in the Military Base. Include gun turrets, mortar platforms, and moving tanks.
