Complete Homeworld 2 mission 13 walkthrough for Balcora Gate. Learn how to save the gate power generators and destroy the Vaygr.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Forget harvesting for now. Immediately send your fighters, corvettes, and bombers to the bottom power generator and destroy the assault frigates there, followed by the HMFs.
  2. 2
Position your capital ships (BCs - Battlecruisers) with larger guns in front and frigates behind to defend against any fighters or frigates that bypass your BCs. Allocate resources (coll - collection) to each group of capital ships for repairs. Construct maximum ion frigates and create a mass minefield, arranging your fleet as mines, ion frigates, BCs, DNs (Dreadnoughts), Destroyers (D's), and then frigates.
  3. 3
Your fighters, corvettes, and bombers should easily destroy the Vaygr frigates near the gate power generator. The other two generators can be lost without consequence. A small force of 2-3 frigates will approach from the gate direction, along with a medium group of fighters and corvettes. Use your maxed-out flak frigates against the fighters and your dual BCs and DN against the frigates. Two interceptors (infs) will come from the right.
  4. 4
With your main fleet, concentrate fire on the enemy BCs using your own BCs and Destroyers. Engage any enemy frigates that come within range of your BCs' guns with your frigates, but be careful not to let them get past your BCs.
  5. 5
The frigates attacking the gate will soon be destroyed. Send your bombers and corvettes back to base.
  6. 6
As soon as your main force can break out, head towards the area before the gate. Send two DFFs (Destroyer Frigates) if available. Do not attack the gate directly, as you will be picked off by 6-7 BCs. Leave a small force at your MS (Mothership) to support the newly built ion frigates. Continuously replace lost ships. New ships can remain at base until you have a clear path to the front lines. Keep the force heading towards the blank area before the gate close to the MS for protection against attacks from the right, which will only be defended by ion frigates.
  7. 7
You should have now stopped the destruction of the gate power generator and can join forces with the main group. Immediately attack the enemy BCs with your entire heavy force. Your pulsars and bombers should target the heavy missile subsystems on the enemy BCs. Once a subsystem is destroyed, move to the next BC. This action protects your own BCs, DNs, and Destroyers.
  8. 8
If any ship's health drops to yellow, order it to evasive maneuvers and retreat. Send resources (coll) to repair them immediately. If a large number of missiles target a single ship, order your DFFs to that ship and activate its DF (Defensive Field). This can significantly reduce incoming missile damage.
  9. 9
By this point, you should have destroyed the BCs, with fighters and corvettes taking out their heavy missile launchers, effectively halving their firepower. Destroy any remaining enemy units where the BCs were and proceed towards the Vaygr SY (Shipyard). Expect two large forces of approximately 20-30 frigates near the SY.
  10. 10
These frigates will not actively attack. Position your fleet just outside their visual range. Build one or two minelayers and start mining the area between your main heavy attack force and the enemy frigate armada. Have a substantial number of mines ready before engaging your heavies. Ensure your forces are fully repaired and restocked with replacements before attacking. Ideally, your forces should fire from within the minefield, allowing the mines to pursue and destroy at least half of the enemy fleet. Mines are very effective; three minelayers can destroy a BC.
  11. 11
As you finish off the remaining frigates, be ready to withdraw any ships before they are destroyed. Before attacking the enemy SY, retire all replaceable frigates like marine frigates, ion frigates, flak frigates, and torpedo frigates. Leave any Vaygr frigates you may have. Do not retire Captain Soban if you still have him, as he is very powerful. Retire any bombers or movers as they will not be needed in the next mission. Before destroying the SY, you should have few frigates, bombers, or movers remaining. Keep your pulsars, as they will be needed. Replace any lost Destroyers and BCs using RU (Resource Units) from wreckage on the map. When ready, destroy the SY and proceed.
Tips
  • Don't forget to use Sensors Distortion Probes to protect your minelayers while continuously deploying mines that track enemy BCs.
  • Consider an alternate strategy: In the previous mission (Thaddis Sabbah), destroy all Vaygr forces but do not save Captain Soban yet. Salvage as much as possible and build a maximum of four carriers. As each carrier is built, immediately construct modules for fighters, corvettes, and frigates. Then, scrap all units a carrier can build: all fighters, corvettes, and frigates. This approach can help overcome the Vaygr forces, which are calculated to be approximately 1.75 times your own strength.
