Evading the Police

In the sprawling metropolis of Liberty City, attracting the attention of the law is an inevitable part of Grand Theft Auto III. Understanding how to effectively evade the police, represented by the Wanted Level system, is crucial for survival and for continuing your criminal endeavors without interruption. The higher your wanted level, the more aggressive and numerous the law enforcement response becomes.

The Wanted Level is indicated by stars on your HUD. One star sifies a minor offense, while six stars represent a full-scale police and military crackdown. The response escalates with each star: one star might bring a single police car, while six stars will deploy helicopters, SWAT teams, and even tanks. Your goal is to reduce these stars to zero to escape the pursuit.

The most straightforward method of evading the police is by using the Pay 'n' Spray. These garages, marked by a spray can icon on your radar, will repaint your vehicle, effectively removing one to two wanted stars. You must be in the vehicle and drive into the garage. Be aware that if you have too many wanted stars (typically 5 or 6), the Pay 'n' Spray will not work, and you'll need to find another way to reduce your wanted level first.

Another effective method is to find Police Bribes. These are small, flashing green icons that appear on your radar when you are actively being pursued or have a wanted level. Collecting a Police Bribe will immediately reduce your wanted level by one star. They are often found in alleyways, behind buildings, or in areas where police activity is common. Prioritize collecting these whenever possible.

Driving skill is paramount. Learning to navigate Liberty City's streets, alleys, and shortcuts is essential. Use your knowledge of the map to your advantage. Ducking into narrow alleyways, driving through construction sites, or using elevated highways can help you break line of sight with pursuers. Vehicles with good acceleration and handling, like sports cars or motorcycles, are ideal for quick getaways.

Destroying police vehicles can also help reduce your wanted level, but this is a risky strategy. While taking out pursuing cars might temporarily slow them down, it can also escalate the situation and attract more attention. If you have a powerful weapon, like a shotgun or SMG, you can try to disable pursuing vehicles by shooting their tires or engine block.

Finally, hiding is a viable tactic. If you can find a secluded spot, such as a dead-end alley or a hidden area, and remain stationary for a period, your wanted stars will gradually decrease. This is particularly effective for lower wanted levels. For higher wanted levels, you'll need to combine this with other methods, like using the Pay 'n' Spray or collecting Police Bribes.
