Essential Tips

Difficulty: Avoid the “Give Me God of War” difficulty for your first playthrough. It is brutal and requires intimate knowledge of the game’s mechanics. You cannot change down to an easier difficulty on that save file.

Skills: Purchase Executioner’s Cleave early on. It is one of the most damaging skills if timed correctly and can trigger unique brutal death animations on enemies close to death.

Combat: Make use of the Ranged Axe Throw. It can trip smaller enemies, pin larger ones to walls, or be used to whittle down the health of enemies above your level by maintaining distance.

Exploration: Look high and low while exploring. Use the camera to find hidden cages that can be knocked down with the axe, and paths that can be traversed below. Many collectibles are hidden off the beaten path.

Builds: Choose a build and playstyle. For a glass cannon, equip armor and enchantments boosting Strength and focus on evading. For a more defensive approach, increase Defence with armor.

Atreus: Don’t neglect Atreus’ skill upgrades. Upgrades that increase the strength and firerate of his arrows are crucial early on.

Runic Attacks and Summons: Experiment with Runic Attacks and Summons. Some can be incredibly useful and alter your strategy against certain enemies, even if they require investment to upgrade.

Enchantments: Change your Enchantments to fit the situation. Equip health regen enchantments if you need more health, or enchantments that boost Spartan Rage regen if you want to enter Spartan Rage more often.
