Discover a fun, complex base strategy for Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2. Learn about building a 'Power Grid' and using spies for infiltration.
- Play on a map suited for 8 players.
- Play with only one friend to conserve space.
- Hope your starting position is far from the enemy.
- Try to ensure your enemy is Soviet, not Allied.
- Do not use this strategy against Iraq; use tanks instead.
Walkthrough
- 1Start by setting up your initial base: Build a Refinery, Power Plant, Barracks, some GIs, a Pillbox or two, War Factory, 4-7 Chrono Miners, a bunch of Grizzlies, Air Force Command HQ, 4 Harriers, Battle Lab, some Prism Towers, some Patriots, additional Power Plants, Service Depot, and a new MCV.
- 2Move the new MCV to a position further from your base, preferably away from the enemy. Deploy it and start building a lot of Power Plants until you have about 20. Scatter these around as much as possible in the new construction area.
- 3Build a Barracks at this new location. Set up some Pillboxes and train about 30 GIs here, then deploy them. Build some Attack Dogs here as well.
- 4Switch back to your original Barracks and ensure you have about 50 GIs, all deployed.
- 5Place a Refinery at the newer base. If you feel uncomfortable with defense, place some extra Prism Towers or Patriots. This new base will be called the "Power Grid".
- 6At your original base, build about 5 extra miners to increase cash flow.
- 7If the enemy has shown their face, send a unit for reconnaissance. Replace any lost units and return focus to your bases.
- 8If the enemy has not attacked, build a Gap Generator. You should have enough power; if more is needed, build additional Power Plants at the "Power Grid".
- 9Once the Gap Generator is up, the enemy will have a hard time finding you.
- 10To defend against Super Weapons, prepare for sneak attacks. Build some Attack Dogs and station them by important structures to guard against spies (if playing against an Allied enemy).
- 11Build a Tanya unit and four Spies. Place them all in a Helicopter.
- 12Infiltrate the enemy's War Factory, Barracks, Battle Lab, and Power Plants with your Spies. This will shut down their power, allowing Tanya to destroy Tesla Coils and any detected super weapons.
- 13After Tanya is lost, build another 30 GIs, and then another 30, aiming for about 100 GIs at your original base.
- 14March your GIs to the enemy base or use the Helicopter to rally them to a point. Find the most undefended area of their base and strike.
- 15Deploy your GIs, destroy defensive structures, and then tanks. Deploy your forces around their Construction Yard and demolish it.
- 16Move all your troops back to your base.
- 17Replace any lost GIs or Tanks from the initial assault.
- 18Build a new MCV and place it far from your base to establish the "Air Base". Deploy it and build a Refinery and a Barracks.
- 19Guard the Air Base well with many Prism Towers.
- 20Have your Harriers take off from the original base and move them to the new Air Base. Sell off the original Air Force Command HQ and build a new one at the Air Base.
- 21Land your Harriers and build about 5 more HQs at the Air Base, stocking them with Harriers.
- 22Launch a Harrier to find tech buildings like Oil Derricks or Airports that can be captured.
- 23Build as many Engineers as there are Tech Buildings and capture them.
- 24Build about 5 new Power Plants at your "Power Grid".
- 25Build a new MCV and deploy it. Place a Refinery and a Barracks next to it.
- 26Build about 30 GIs here and place some Pillboxes and Prism Towers in this new base.
- 27Build a Battle Lab here and sell off the old one.
Tips
- The "Power Grid" strategy involves building a massive number of Power Plants.
- Use Spies to infiltrate enemy structures and disable their power.
- Tanya is effective for destroying key enemy defenses like Tesla Coils.
- If playing against Iraq, use tanks instead of this specific GI-focused strategy.
- Capture neutral Oil Derricks or Airports with Engineers for additional resources and advantages.
- Consider leaving the enemy's Service Depot and War Factory standing to keep the match somewhat fair.
