C4 packs are a versatile Perk 1 explosive in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, useful for clearing rooms, ambushes, and passive defense. They appear as small brown packages with strapping and a blinking red light. Avoid enemy C4; shoot it to detonate if it's hostile, identifiable by the lack of a friendly flag.

Basics: C4 can be placed directly by looking down and pressing the 'z' button, or thrown by aiming and pressing 'z'. You can detonate them remotely by pulling the trigger on the detonator, or by swapping weapons and double-tapping the left D-pad. C4 can be thrown about half the distance of a grenade, roughly 30 feet, suitable for windows or large rooms.

Effective Use: C4 is often used for passive defense in Search & Destroy, Headquarters, and Domination, being most effective in Domination. Detonation can occur by pulling the detonator trigger, being shot, or by splash damage from other explosives. C4 remains in place even after you die, so be mindful of placement in modes like Headquarters to avoid accidentally assisting the enemy with challenges like "Dominoes".

C4 can be stuck to any surface: cars, ground, walls, ceilings, barrels, etc. This allows for disguised placement in unexpected spots, particularly effective on Vacant, where ceiling or wall placements in high-traffic areas can yield many kills, especially with the Sonic Boom perk.

Examples of Effective Use:

1. Domination Defense: Place C4 as passive defense while capturing other flags. Remotely detonate when the game indicates a flag is being lost, concealing packs in the environment to prevent enemy destruction.
2. Ambush on Vacant: Place C4 on a wall near the warehouse exit. Fire pistol shots to lure enemies out, then detonate as they approach. This can be observed from a lower area outside.
3. Window Toss: Throw C4 from ground level into second-story windows. While the arc is lower than grenades, close-range throws are effective.
4. CQC/Dances of Death: Toss C4 ahead of an enemy and detonate, then clean up survivors. Effective against players who prone, bunny hop, or circle-reload.
5. Elevated Window Defense: If an enemy knows your position in an elevated window, move to see the stairway and place C4 on the wall or ceiling where they would ascend. Detonate when they appear.
6. Anti-LMG Mounts: Place C4 on the ceiling, wall behind, or underneath LMG mounts for a surprise attack.

Practicing the throwing motion is crucial for offensive use. C4 can be detonated in mid-air, and throwing both packs at once allows for a single detonation to fire both. Be aware that enemy bullets can detonate C4 in your face, leading to potential "Counter C4" or "Return to Sender" challenges. C4 can lead to humorous deaths, especially with multi-pack detonations.

Pro Performance Tip: For the "How the?" challenge, instead of shooting enemy explosives through walls, use your own C4 with the Deep Impact perk. Place C4 under SAW mounts or in other ambush spots, then shoot through the wall to detonate and complete the challenge. Your own C4 can also be used for the "Counter C4" challenge by placing them in anticipated enemy locations and shooting them.
