Counter-sniping in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a crucial skill for dealing with players who utilize sniper rifles. The primary method involves using an Assault Rifle (AR) with an ACOG scope to engage snipers while side-stepping. It's vital to never stand still when trading fire with a sniper, as they only need one well-placed shot. Maintaining a controlled but erratic movement pattern makes it difficult for them to aim accurately.

Skilled snipers often move after kills or misses, making them harder to locate. If a sniper spots you first, retreat to cover and seek flanking routes. When sweeping a map, anticipate sniper positions, especially in maps like Crossfire and Overgrown, by looking into windows and blown-out walls. In maps like Bloc, Strike, and Pipeline, where cover is easily changed, using a weapon like the M4 from lower ground can be effective due to its accuracy, though its lower bullet damage necessitates the Stopping Power perk for quick kills.

If you are outmatched by an elite sniper, trading fire directly may not work. Instead, flank them and use cooked grenades or engage in close-quarters combat (CQC). Be aware of claymores used by snipers to protect their flanks or backs, particularly on maps like Crossfire. While the Bomb Squad Perk can help detect claymores, you can also shoot them through walls to detonate them safely or find an alternate route. If a sniper hears a claymore detonate, they might prepare for CQC, giving you an opportunity to use stun or flash grenades, cooked grenades, or direct gunfire.

Constant movement is paramount. If you're sniped on an approach, avoid taking the same route back. Snipers may time their shots, so always move in a zigzag pattern and seek cover if hit. If under fire, retreat to heal before re-engaging. Remember to change your location and elevation when engaging snipers. Importantly, sniper rifles cannot be suppressed, so their shots will appear as red dots on the radar, indicating their general direction. Use this information to flank them and secure the kill.
