Learn how to effectively diversify your squad roles in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II to overcome challenges and achieve victory on the battlefield.
In most situations, it's best to spread responsibilities amongst your team members. These roles can be further tweaked on a mission-by-mission basis to make gameplay more manageable. The game provides opportunities to do this, and it's in your best interest to take advantage of them.
This means you will want to ensure you don't have redundant characters in your in-game squads. For example, if you have a melee-focused Tarkus with Power Swords and Bolters, it's somewhat redundant to have your Force Commander also be a melee-type character. It's a good idea to start figuring out squad compositions as early as possible.
When your units are in the field, if each person has a distinct role, you will find yourself having an easier time defeating foes. For instance:
Imagine you are trying to make your way through a valley pass infested with Orks, many of whom have heavy guns. If you move Tarkus forward, using his special ability, he can easily reach cover while drawing fire. This allows your slower heavy gunners to move forward and set up behind cover while your scouts begin sniping enemies from a distance. Your Force Commander can then move in, using items to assist the others, while closing in to engage remaining enemies in melee, helping to flush them out of cover.
This is a loose example, but you will find the principle helpful.
An amazingly effective squad, especially late-game, consists of a melee-based Force Commander, Cyrus, Thaddeus, and Avitus. The Force Commander acts as your tank. Cyrus can scout enemy locations before taking out high-priority targets with a sniper shot to the head. Avitus can suppress enemies with a heavy bolter, and Thaddeus can destroy enemies while they are suppressed. While it can be a loss to have Tarkus off the field, this squad composition has helped many players overcome higher difficulties with relative ease.
