Timeline of Life Events

Navigate Unpacking's story and unlock every achievement! This guide breaks down each life event, from 1997 to the end, with tips and tricks to help you finish the game.

Alright, let's dive into the story of Unpacking! This game is all about experiencing someone's life through the stuff they own, and this section is going to walk you through all those key moments. Think of it as a journey through time, told by unpacked boxes. We'll cover everything you need to know to get through it and snag all those achievements along the way. Don't worry, nothing's missable, so you can take your time and enjoy the ride!

The game is broken down into levels, each representing a different year and stage of life. You'll be unpacking boxes, placing items, and sometimes even interacting with them in specific ways to trigger events or unlock achievements. It's pretty chill, but there are a few little things to keep an eye out for.

General Tips Before We Start:

  • Unpacking Boxes: The main goal in each level is to empty all the boxes. You click a box to open it, then click an item to pick it up. You can place it anywhere in the room – seriously, don't stress about perfect placement unless you want to! Once an item is out and the box is empty, a final click will make the box disappear.
  • Accessibility Option: I highly recommend turning on the "Allow items anywhere" option in the Accessibility settings. It makes placing items super easy and doesn't affect achievements at all.
  • Item Placement: Most items will auto-rotate to fit where you're trying to place them. You can also manually rotate items with the [B] button. Some things can be stacked, hung on walls, or put on hangers. If you're running out of space, you can carry an item to a different room using [LB] or [RB]. Remember, rooms can scroll up and down too!
  • Clothes Hangers: These can take up a lot of space later on. It's a good idea to hang them up on the wardrobe racks to keep them out of the way.

Ready to start unpacking? Let's jump into the first year!

1997

This is where it all begins! You'll start in a room with a couple of boxes. Just click on them to open them up, then pick out the items and place them down. With the "Allow items anywhere" option on, just pick a spot and click again to place it. Easy peasy.

Keep an eye out for a Rubik's Cube. When you pick it up, keep pressing [B] to try and solve it. You'll see the colors change, and when all sides are the same color, stop pressing [B]! You'll unlock the "Solve a puzzle" achievement here.

You'll also find a Polaroid camera in one of the boxes. Just place it down somewhere, and you'll unlock the "Make some memories" achievement.

Once all the boxes are empty, you'll see a little star pop up in the bottom right corner. Click on that star to finish the 1997 level and earn the "Beginning" achievement!

2004

This level is a bit bigger, with three rooms you can switch between using [LB] and [RB].

First off, head to the bathroom. You'll need to interact with the toilet. Click the handle on the cistern to flush it. This is the first of seven flushes you'll need to do throughout the game for the "Gotta flush 'em all" achievement.

Now, back to the bedroom to unpack the rest. When you find a wooden artist's mannequin, don't just place it down immediately. While holding it, press [B] repeatedly until it does a little dance – it's called a dab! Doing this will unlock the "Strike a pose" achievement. Pretty silly, but hey, it's an achievement!
