Learn how to access Chao Gardens, hatch Chao eggs, basic care like feeding and petting, and understand Chao stats and how animals affect them in Sonic Adventure.

Chao are virtual pets in Sonic Adventure that can be quite complex. This guide covers how to access the Chao Gardens, hatch and care for your Chao, and understand their stats and evolution.

Chao Gardens:

There are three Chao Gardens, and you must reach them to interact with Chao:

  • Station Square: Enter the hotel and use the left elevator.
  • Mystic Ruins: Go into the mountain cave behind Tails' Workshop, then right to a mine car.
  • Egg Carrier: Spell "E-G-G-M-A-N" on the tiles at the back of the hull.

Transports to other gardens are available within each garden.

Hatching Chao:

Chao start as eggs. You can wait for them to hatch, gently rock them to speed it up, or throw them at a wall to hatch them immediately. However, throwing them may result in lower intelligence.

Basic Chao Care:

After hatching, care involves feeding and petting. Find fruit and give it to your Chao; they will eat if hungry. There are normal, Hero, and Dark fruits, with Hero and Dark types affecting alignment. Petting increases their affection, causing them to come to you when whistled for.

Chao Stats:

Chao stats (Swim, Fly, Run, Power, Stamina) are raised by feeding them fruit and giving them animals found in action stages. Each stat has a level and ten dots that fill up. When all dots are filled, the Chao levels up, gaining stat points. The maximum level is 99, with a total of 3266 stat points. Reaching 100 points in Swim, Fly, or Run allows the Chao to learn those abilities. Higher stats improve performance in Chao races.
