They don't excel in one specific area but provide reliable performance across the board. These characters are excellent for players who prefer a flexible playstyle or for filling gaps in a team's strategy. Examples include Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Ninja, and Mii. Mario, for instance, is a very versatile player with good offensive and defensive transitions, an averagely fast normal shot, and decent slapshot recovery. Luigi has slightly better skating than Mario but suffers from recovery issues, especially with lag. Yoshi is a good defender with good speed, making him effective at interceptions, though his slapshot recovery is poor. Ninja is similar to Mario but with better speed and skating, while Mii characters are comparable to Mario but with slightly longer recovery times.
