Learn Golf With Your Friends controls, including topspin, sidespin, and backspin. Understand the tutorial and Rank 1 challenges.
Important Note: The servers for this game officially shut down on September 30th, 2022. Online play and related trophies are no longer available.
Controls:
The Beginner's Guide can be toggled on or off in the Options menu.
Before taking the shot:
- Use the directional buttons to move the target left or right. Aim for the fairway unless the situation is unique.
- Press the triangle button to zoom the camera in.
- Press the circle button to zoom the camera out.
- Press the touch pad to show a fly-by view (minimap (the small circular map in the bottom-left corner of your screen)).
- Press the square button to add 10 yards to a club for a power shot. These are limited and best saved for par 5s early on.
Taking the shot:
- Press X to start the gauge.
- Press X again to set power.
- Press X one more time for impact at the end of the swing.
- An auto impact system is available, which randomly determines the third shot.
- Spin shots are possible but riskier.
Spin Shots:
- Topspin: During impact, press and hold the up directional button. This allows the ball to get more distance. A super topspin (more distance) can be performed by pressing and holding up during power and up during impact with perfect impact.
- Sidespin: During impact, press and hold the left or right directional buttons to make the ball curve, useful for going around obstacles. A super sidespin can be performed by pressing and holding left during power and right during impact (or vice versa) with perfect impact.
- Backspin: During impact, press and hold the down directional button to make the ball stop sooner. A super backspin (stops the ball more effectively) can be performed by pressing and holding up during power and down during impact with perfect impact. Be aware that super backspin can cause the ball sway to go off target about 60% of the time, even with perfect impact.

- Serious Mode makes golfers play better and can yield 1.5 times the EXP and coins upon winning.
- There are 15 golf levels in total, with two additional levels added via patch, though these last two are difficult to achieve and not essential for skill demonstration.
DLC (downloadable content — extra missions or items released after launch) and Gimme Mode:
- If you own the Green C.C. or Balata C.C. DLC courses, they are selectable in Rank 1.
- Gimme mode is available. Although it states it's only available for a short time, it has been present for a long duration and may remain permanently.

Coins are necessary to access the shop, which sells parts and balls. New balls become available as you rank up. You may also win new club sets after completing a tour, which can aid your progress.
Part 2
Master Golf With Your Friends Part 2 with our comprehensive guide. Learn about club sets, VS characters, tournament strategies, and unlocking new abilities.
As you level up in Golf With Your Friends, you'll unlock various club sets. These include Big Air clubs for increased distance, Pin Hole clubs for better control, Turbo Spin clubs for enhanced backspin, and the Infinity Club, which boosts both power and control but suffers from impact. Infinity clubs are only available after reaching Rank 2. The Beginner's ball can help mitigate impact, though it slightly reduces power.
Higher grades of each club set (from grade 5 down to grade 1) can be obtained by winning randomly triggered tours.
Always play with Normal Cups, as they are key to unlocking secret VS characters and trophies through official tours. The OUT course in Eagle City is relatively easy and short. Focus on improving the power and control of your woods and other clubs. Making putts of 15 feet or higher from the green will enhance your putter's Back Door ability. Aim for chip-ins with your AW (approach wedge).
When putting, a general rule is to add an extra foot of distance for every 0.1 indicated on the screen, for both downhill and uphill putts. Longer putts with tricky green reads are challenging, so do your best. You can press the square button to gain extra distance on putts without it counting as a power shot.
Winning a tournament grants EXP to meet your first VS character, who will appear at the stage. Upon returning to the Home Area, Hikari will explain how Match Play format tours work.

Your first VS opponent is Tomomi from the EG Girls. She and Hikari will explain that hitting at 95% or higher extends club distance. Defeating Tomomi rewards you with her entire wardrobe, voiceover, and selectable character options. Some characters also grant new shot types.
Allow Tomomi to win the first match to obtain the Cutscene (Loss) BGM at the Library, then defeat her in a subsequent match. Beating challenge tourney golfers by 3 shots or more adds them to your gallery. You can then copy their appearance, but it's advisable to defeat VS characters first, as parts, voiceovers, and body parts are costly and coins are scarce early on. Online play yields fewer coins. To acquire all parts, focus on Rank 1 tournaments until you have them all. This also builds stats and provides coins for Lucky Dip Boxes, preparing you for VS matches.
After Tomomi, win another challenge tourney to face Gabriel, a young player who discusses backspin with Specs. Gabriel uses a Beginner's Ball. Defeating him earns you the Body: Male 3, his parts, voiceover, and the Type 8 swing.
Win another challenge tourney to meet Cindy, a member of Team Euro and your first boss character. Hikari and Specs will discuss Control and Power Mode. You'll then participate in a match with Auto Impact rules, which is a unique occurrence.
Part 3
Master Rank 2 in Golf With Your Friends! Learn about new caddies like Junichi, unlock powerful swings like Type 4 and Type 6, and strategies for Stroke and Points Matches against opponents like Ryoko, Takamori, and Boris.
You've reached Rank 2 in Golf With Your Friends! This rank introduces new mechanics and challenges. You'll unlock the Type 4 swing, which allows for fine-tuning shot distance by pressing triangle to slightly extend or circle to slightly decrease distance at impact. This rank also unlocks the Eagle City IN course. Upon reaching Rank 2, Hikari welcomes you and you'll find a Power Shot power-up and a new caddy, Junichi, both located near your starting position. Pick up the Power Mode power-up when the X appears to gain a Power Shot. Talk to Junichi to select him as your caddy via the Customization menu.
Returning to Rank 1 tours allows you to shuffle participants using coins, with the cost being your rank number multiplied by 10. Adding 30 golfers to your gallery powers up a random club's stats by one level. Rank 2 tours feature golfers with levels ranging from 6 to 8, with Serious Mode enabled. The 80 golfers in Rank 2 include Adama (Golf Level 3), Ai (Golf Level 3), Alzira (Golf Level 2), Angela (Golf Level 3), Ariadne (Golf Level 3), Asako (Golf Level 4), Ayako (Golf Level 4), Ayano (Golf Level 3), Bohyung (Golf Level 2), Chad (Golf Level 4), Charles (Golf Level 2), Chio (Golf Level 2), Clarisse (Golf Level 3), Da-Min (Golf Level 4), Debbie (Golf Level 4), Gonsaku (Golf Level 2), Hadi (Golf Level 2), Hae-Yeon (Golf Level 3), Hamayo (Golf Level 3), Haruto (Golf Level 3), Hasue (Golf Level 2), Herculano (Golf Level 2), Hidemasa (Golf Level 2), Hina (Golf Level 3), Hyun-Joong (Golf Level 3), Ikuto (Golf Level 3), Jeina (Golf Level 2), Jeong-Sang (Golf Level 4), Jeong-Tae (Golf Level 4), Kamezo (Golf Level 3), Katsumasa (Golf Level 4), Kendall (Golf Level 2), Kimiko (Golf Level 2), Kinue (Golf Level 4), Kiyoshi (Golf Level 3), Luz (Golf Level 3), Mai (Golf Level 3), Maiko (Golf Level 3), Maryam (Golf Level 3), Masamune (Golf Level 4), Miki (Golf Level 4), Miku (Golf Level 3), Misae (Golf Level 4), Miyuki (Golf Level 4), Morita (Golf Level 2), Muneo (Golf Level 2), Naoki (Golf Level 4), Naoko (Golf Level 4), Neung-Mi (Golf Level 4), Nobuki (Golf Level 4), Rabi (Golf Level 4), Rabia (Golf Level 4), Regina (Golf Level 2), Reiko (Golf Level 4), Ren (Golf Level 3), Rentaro (Golf Level 2), Riko (Golf Level 3), Romaine (Golf Level 2), Ryu (Golf Level 3), Ryutaro (Golf Level 4), Sachiko (Golf Level 2), Samson (Golf Level 3), Saori (Golf Level 4), Satoshi (Golf Level 4), Seon-Hong (Golf Level 3), Shino (Golf Level 4), Sigurd (Golf Level 4), Sota (Golf Level 3), Suzanne (Golf Level 4), Takumi (Golf Level 3), Teruko (Golf Level 2), Tetsuya (Golf Level 4), Ting-Fung (Golf Level 2), Toru (Golf Level 4), Tsubasa (Golf Level 3), Tsuyoshi (Golf Level 4), Vecente (Golf Level 3), Yonatan (Golf Level 3), Yumi (Golf Level 3), and Yutaka (Golf Level 4).
Completing an 18-hole tour in Rank 2 will lead to your first Rank 2 opponent, Ryoko, an EG Girl. She and Hikari will discuss triangle and circle shots. This is your first Stroke Format match, a two-player tournament similar to a regular challenge. After defeating Ryoko, you'll receive her voiceover, parts, and the Type 6 swing. If you have Beatrice or Nanaco from Rank 1 in your gallery, consider copying them, as the other Grump VO is unavailable until much later.
After another 18-hole or two 9-hole tours, you'll face Takamori. He and Specs will explain putting and the Back Door skill. This is also your first Points Match, where the higher point total wins ties. Key to this match are the opening tee shot and getting close to the pin. Longer drives on the fairway earn more points, while landing in hazards or out of bounds results in point deductions. Defeating Takamori grants his parts, voiceover, and the Body: Male 4 unlock. You'll also unlock Alpina Forest's OUT & IN courses and the Homing Shot ability, which uses Super Backspin to guide shots towards the cup if they hit the pin. You will also be allowed to use carts from this point forward.
Part 4
Advance through Golf With Your Friends ranks! Master Rank 3 challenges, unlock new caddies like Elsa and Suzuki, and conquer Rank 4 tournaments to progress.
You've made it to Rank 3! After Hikari congratulates you, focus on finding your next Power Mode power-up and caddy. Turn around and you'll see the caddy on the road. Talk to her and Elsa will be available to select as a caddy. Now head toward the beach and make a left at the small fork and you should see the power up just close by. Now go ahead and talk to the professor again and you'll be able to take the intermediate quiz. It's tougher than the basic quiz, so don't be surprised if you get one wrong. When you manage to get all ten correct, you'll get the Replay Camera as the reward. He will also tell you that you have to get to Rank 6 to take the advanced quiz, which is also the last.
By now, you may have gotten enough official birdies to unlock your first secret VS character. You may be overmatched for this one as he easily performs better than the characters of this rank, but if you are confident enough in your golf skills, feel free to challenge him. More on him and other Secret VS characters later.
The challenge tourney opponents of Rank 3 are, as you guessed it, a little stronger than Rank 2. Their golf levels range from 7 to 10 and will naturally perform better on Mega Cups than Normal Cups for whatever reason. Be prepared for a fight with Tornado Cups also. Same deal as Rank 2, with the addition of the Alpina Forest tours. Win an 18 hole tourney or two 9 hole tourneys and you'll unlock the first VS character for this rank who will introduce herself as Mayu. Along with Specs, they'll talk about homing shots. The match itself is another Points Match and you'll get the rare occasion of having light wind for this one. Defeat her to get her parts, her voice over and the Body: Female 4 as well. You may want Gimme mode on for this match because the AI likes to be super cheap with the chip-ins, especially on Mega Cups after you get so close to the pin and that ends up happening to ya.
Two more 9H tourneys or an 18H tourney and you'll face Pancho. Along with Hikari, they'll talk about sidespin and how you can use it to go around trees and other obstacles. This match will be your second Stroke Format match. Also another opportunity to get more official birdies as well as eagles if you can. Defeat Pancho successfully and you'll get his parts along with his voice over.
Another two more 9H tourneys or an 18H tourney and you'll face the boss for this rank, which is another EG Girl member named Lena. Along with Hikari, they'll talk about the different types of balls outside of Standard and Beginner balls. If you haven't battled the first secret VS character yet, this will be your first match with Teeny Cups. Successfully defeat Lena to get her outfit and voice over. You'll also unlock the Kanaloa Beach course as well as the Rising Shot. To do a Rising Shot, do a Super Topspin shot and if it hits the pin, the ball will rise up and then come down right in the hole. It works over 95% of the time, so use it well. You've completed rank 3!
After Hikari congratulates you once again, it's time to find the next Power Mode power-up. Head for the cart behind you and it will be in the front of it. The caddy is on the roadway by the water, so use your cart to get to him and it will be Suzuki himself who will join the ranks as a caddy. Once you're done, start doing the next set of tourneys to unlock the next VS opponent. Kanaloa Beach itself is surrounded by the ocean, so take care not to go
