This section covers the basic controls for Shovel Knight and provides general gameplay tips. It also details the gold values of different gems and offers advice on managing checkpoints and relics.

Game Basics and Tips:

• Phase Locket: A relic that grants about 3 seconds of invincibility, allowing survival on spikes. Recommended as a default relic.
• Chalices: Similar to bottles in Zelda. Buy them ASAP and use them at the Troupple Pond. The Renewal Ichor (restores all health and magic) is highly recommended.
• Always dig up campfire dirt.
• The fishing pole is a worthwhile investment.
• Checkpoints: Can be broken for more money, but removes the checkpoint. The guide will sometimes advise on this, but it's your choice.
• Gold Values: Grey Gem (1), Blue Gem (5), Green Gem (10), Yellow Gem (20), Red Gem (50), Pink Gem (200).
• Always spend money when possible to avoid losing it.
• The downward shovel attack can be canceled into a normal attack.
• Many projectile attacks can be repelled with the shovel.
• Missed relics can be bought from the village relic shop or re-obtained by replaying the level.
• The game is full of hidden items, often indicated by icons on walls.
• Feat Grouping: Some difficult feats can be grouped into single runs. For example, 'Hurry up!', 'Impossible!', 'Perfect Platformer', and 'Checkpointless' can be done together as dying would reset the run anyway. 'Penny Pincher' and 'True Shovelry' can be grouped by not buying any relics.
