Guide to defeating your rival Silver in Azalea Town and finding the lost Farfetch'd in Ilex Forest in Pokémon Gold and Silver. Includes item locations and trainer data.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
After defeating Bugsy in Azalea Town, heal your Pokémon at the Pokémon Center.
  2. 2
As you attempt to leave Azalea Town to the west, your rival, Silver, will challenge you to a battle.
  3. 3
Rival Battle - Silver: His party consists of Gastly Lv. 12, Zubat Lv. 14, and his starter Pokémon (Croconaw, Bayleef, or Quilava) Lv. 16. Be mindful of type advantages and his starter's STAB moves.
  4. 4
After the battle, head west into Ilex Forest.
  5. 5
Follow the linear path in Ilex Forest until you encounter a man looking for his lost Farfetch'd.
  6. 6
Follow the path to find the Farfetch'd. Each time you attempt to speak to it, it will run away. You need to approach it from behind multiple times.
  7. 7
A specific sequence for finding Farfetch'd is: go north, then east, north, west, south, and speak to it. You can find a Revive along this path.
  8. 8
Continue south, follow it, and speak to it.
  9. 9
Go further south, follow it, and speak to it again.
  10. 10
Approach the owner of the Farfetch'd, and you will receive HM01 (Cut). This HM allows you to cut down small trees in the field.

Items Available with Cut:

  • Azalea Town: In the southeastern house, speak to an NPC to receive Charcoal, which boosts Fire-type moves by 10%.
  • Route 34: In the northern half of Route 34, southwest of the person who gives you a Miracle Seed, you'll find a Cut tree. Cut it down and head north and east to an NPC who will provide an item (details cut off in source).

Wild Pokémon Info:

  • Ilex Forest: Primarily Bug and Grass types. Caterpie (Gold) evolve into good status inflictors. Weedle (Silver) evolve into decent Physical Attackers. Oddish are decent Grass-types.
  • Route 34: Abra evolves into a strong Special Attacker, especially if traded. Ditto is useful for breeding.
