Guide to Azalea Town, the Slowpoke Well, and defeating Gym Leader Bugsy to earn the Hive Badge and TM49 (Fury Cutter) in Pokémon Gold and Silver.
- 1Upon arriving in Azalea Town, you'll find the Slowpoke Well blocked. Head west into town.
- 2In the town's northwestern corner, find a tree that yields a Wht Apricorn.
- 3Speak to Kurt, the man near the bookshelves in the house nearby. He will go to the Slowpoke Well to confront Team Rocket.
- 4Follow Kurt into the Slowpoke Well. Navigate the linear path, fighting Team Rocket Grunts. You will find a Super Potion along the way.
- 5Defeat the final Grunt at the end of the well. Kurt will leave with you.
- 6Return to Azalea Town and speak with Kurt. He will give you a Lure Ball and offer to craft Poké Balls from Apricorns you bring him. The White Apricorn can be made into a Fast Ball.
- 7Heal your party and proceed to the Azalea Town Gym.
- 8Work your way around the edges of the Gym, battling Trainers.
- 9Reach the center of the Gym to challenge Gym Leader Bugsy.

Metapod and Kakuna primarily use String Shot to lower Speed and Harden to increase Defense. Tackle and Poison Sting can be annoying, especially if Poison status is inflicted. Switching Pokémon after defeating one of them can help negate stat decrements. Using Special-class moves (Fire, Electric, Water) is effective against their high Defense. Stat-boosting moves can also be useful here due to minimal HP loss.
Scyther is faster and stronger. Its Fury Cutter move is particularly threatening as it gains power with successive uses and receives STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus). Use your fastest Pokémon that resists Bug-type moves, such as Flying or Fire types. Rock-type Pokémon can also be effective due to STAB super-effective moves and resistance to Quick Attack. Onix, with its high Defense and Rock-type moves, is a good option.
- Hive Badge: Enables the use of Cut outside of battle, makes traded Pokémon under Level 30 obey you, and boosts the power of your Bug moves by 12.5%.
- TM49 (Fury Cutter): A move that increases in power with successive uses.
