This section details the objectives and plot progression within Midnight Club: Los Angeles. The game begins with the player arriving in Los Angeles and receiving a call from the City Champ, Booke. The player chooses one of three starter cars: a 1998 Nissan 240SX, a 1983 Volkswagen Golf GTI, or a 1988 Volkswagen Scirocco. As the player builds reputation, they can become the City Champ. After defeating regional opponents and eventually Booke in a final race at the Standard Hotel, the player becomes the City Champ, unlocking further championship races against other vehicle class Champs: Oswaldo, Julian, Lester, Pete, and Marcel. Following this, Booke proposes a partnership to co-own garages for $1 million, offering free access to garage contents in return.
