Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak Part 23 covers stealing support frigates, destroying the collision asteroid, and managing fleet size.
- 1Keep missile destroyers near your carrier. Dock salvage corvettes to allow ion cannons to focus on proximity detectors, buying time if you are short on salvage corvettes.
- 2Form a formidable fleet. Proceed to the nearest hyperspace gate with your destroyer group on evasive, supported by support frigates. Have your corvette wing nearby and a carrier with salvage corvettes docked.
- 3Attack the gate with your destroyer group. A fighter battle group will jump in. Use corvettes to attack bombers first, as they target support frigates. Use bursts (not multiguns) to destroy them.
- 4Launch salvage corvettes to steal the two support frigates.
- 5Approach the next gate similarly, being careful not to enter the sphere's area. Repeat the process: destroy the jumping-in fighters first, then steal the support frigates.
- 6The third gate is identical to the second.
- 7Be wary of fighter wings attacking your frontal carrier group or stolen resourcers. Use grav wells to steal them if desired.
- 8To deal with the sphere: Move a single cruiser to the front, supported by all support ships except 5 frigates. Move it in to see the cutscene (a non-interactive cinematic the game plays automatically). Move a scout or proximity detector to the cruiser, then back to your cruiser. Have salvagers ready, supported by the 5 frigates. Keep spare salvagers at the back. Use a proximity detector to spot cloaked ships approaching. Fire one salvo from your cruiser at the target cruiser, cancel orders, set to evasive, and move in salvage corvettes (cloaked ones are best) to steal the target and its escort destroyer.
- 9Repeat the salvage process for the ion cannon wing, then the two destroyer fleets, being wary of other ion cannons emerging from the sphere.
- 10Salvage the carrier, resourcers, and resource controllers. Destroy multigun corvettes with any available ships.
- 11Destroy the inhibitors by moving a capital ship to where the resource controller was and attacking it.
- 12Research all available technologies.
- 13Marshal your fleet (select all ships and press Tab). If your fleet exceeds 300 capital ships (the upper limit for hyperspace travel without game freeze), select ships up to the limit, leaving at least 20 support frigates. Scuttle any excess ships that won't form the military parade.
- 14Group resourcers (10-12), destroyers, ion cannons, cruisers with fighter attack wings, and support frigates into distinct groups for easier management.
- 15Jump to the next mission once your fleet is reduced and groupings are organized.
Mission 15: Chapelous Perilous
Mission Objectives:
- Destroy the collision asteroid
This mission features a sliding difficulty scale based on fleet size. Once jumped in, select all support frigates except two for MS support. Launch heavy corvettes to form a defensive wall against incoming fighter wings. Simultaneously, marshal the rest of your fleet 1500-2500 meters below the MS and move them forward. Dock all strike craft with the MS. Select your resourcers, press K, and ram them into the back of the incoming asteroid. Concentrate all ships on the asteroid; it will eventually explode. If it is badly damaged but not destroyed, the MS will survive but be severely damaged. Jump out as soon as possible.
For smaller fleets, there will be a minimal guard for the asteroid. For maximum fleet sizes, expect large numbers of destroyers and assault frigates.
You can stay to capture more destroyers, but for the final mission, you only need 20 support frigates, 9 destroyers, and 25 ion cannon frigates. You may lose more ships than you capture.
Additional Information:
- Enemy forces can include: 1 wing of bombers, 1 wing of interceptors, 1 wing of defenders, 4 destroyers, and 10-20 assault frigates (sometimes in an X formation), plus the collision asteroid.
- Keep salvage corvettes close to your carrier for quick deployment.
- Prioritize destroying bombers to protect your support frigates.
- Use burst fire from corvettes to destroy newly arrived fighters before they materialize.
- When salvaging, ensure your salvage corvettes are ready to deploy immediately after enemy ships are disabled.
- For the sphere objective, use proximity detectors to reveal cloaked ships before engaging.
- When managing fleet size, prioritize keeping essential support frigates.
- During Mission 15, use resourcers to ram the asteroid if direct destruction proves difficult.
- Familiarize yourself with your ship groupings before jumping to the next mission.
