Navigate Part 56 of Half-Life: Opposing Force using two shortcut methods to reach section c4a1b, bypassing difficult sections.
Walkthrough
- 1When the scene starts to fade in, turn left a bit and watch for two huge rocky spires to rise from the ground. Note the hole the second spire rises from.
- 2Restore your game from the end of "Gonarch's Lair," then drop into the teleporter again.
- 3Run for the second spire's hole as soon as you can see where you're going.
- 4When you reach the edge of the hole, look down into it to see the rocky spire's top. Drop onto it and ride it all the way up.
- 5Look around for a floating rock platform nearby that you can jump to.
- 6Quicksave (save your game quickly) and start shooting down all nearby alien controllers (hostile NPCs).
- 7Use the gluon gun until you run out of ammo, then switch to the .357 magnum or assault rifle. The shotgun is effective for controllers that fly very close.
- 8After all nearby controllers are dead, quicksave again.
- 9Look for the next-lowest moving platform in the series.
- 10Jump to it and make your way down to a stationary rock platform with an ammo canister on it, which is a ways above the surface.
- 11Keep watching for and shooting down alien controllers as you descend.
- 12Once on the rock platform, stay crouched and move around to avoid being zapped by vortigaunts (hostile NPCs) on the island's surface.
- 13Watch for an alien flyer (hostile NPC (non-player character — anyone the game controls, not you)) to appear and fly close enough to run onto.
- 14Once on the flyer, get out the assault rifle and crouch near its center. Use AR (assault rifle) grenades to quickly eliminate any vortigaunts that can zap you as you ride along.
- 15When you get close to the large floating rock with an alien teleporter gadget on it, quicksave before long-jumping (a special jump move) to the rock.
- 16Once on the rock, enter the teleporter to get to section c4a1b.
Shortcut #2: Long Jump to Flyer
- When the scene starts to fade in, turn left slightly, then run forward to land near the right edge of the island below.
- Run along the edge to get onto one end of a rocky hill.
- Get out the crossbow or .357 magnum and snipe the vortigaunt standing near the other end of the hill.
- Run over to that end, get out the gluon gun, and quicksave.
- Crouch down on the lower part of the hilltop so any vorts on the ground nearby cannot see you. Be ready to blast any that run up quickly. Aggressive alien controllers will also swarm you.
- Locate the stationary floating rock a ways beyond your hilltop position. You cannot long-jump directly to it, but watch for an alien flyer to appear near it and fly past.
- Before a flyer appears, use the gluon gun to destroy alien controllers, switching to the .357 magnum or assault rifle after running out of gluon ammo.
- As soon as a flyer appears near the rock, quicksave and attempt to long-jump onto the flyer. This jump is very difficult and may require many retries.
- It is best to long-jump off the highest point of the hilltop while running toward the flyer.
- Once on the flyer, crouch-walk to its approximate center.
- Get out the assault rifle and use AR grenades to quickly destroy any vorts on the ground below that can zap you.
- Ignore remaining alien controllers and focus on the vorts, as they can damage you much faster.
- When you get close to the large floating rock with an alien teleporter gadget on it, quicksave before long-jumping to the rock.
- Once on the rock, enter the teleporter to get to section c4a1b.
Section c4a1b: Small Vort Cave, Gargantua Lair, and Several Tentacles
Walkthrough
- 1Make a regular save and two quicksaves.
- 2Ensure all your weapons are reloaded.
- 3Get the armor batteries located next to a dead HEV (Hazardous Environment) suit wearer and behind the teleporter structure you appeared on.
- 4Leave the cave and turn left.
- 5Crouch-walk next to a large broken-off rocky spire piece.
- 6Move slowly until you can see an alien grunt (hostile NPC) on top of a distant hill.
- 7Edge over until you can only see the lower part of the grunt, then fire hornets (a weapon type) toward it until it falls over dead.
- 8Crouch-walk under the broken spire piece, then move to the base on the left where it broke off.
- 9Strafe right until you can see another grunt-on-a-hill ahead.
- 10Move to where you can only see part of it before sneak-shooting it with hornets. If either grunt sees you, they will signal for a flyer to drop off more grunts.
- 11As you move carefully forward between spiky plants, look around the two up-and-down machines ahead for any vort workers (hostile NPCs) nearby.
- 12If vort workers are present, quickly hornet-shoot them before approaching the machines, using the spiky alien plants for cover (press the cover button to crouch behind walls or objects).
- 13After the outdoor vorts are dead, look to the right of the rightmost up-and-down machine for a cave entrance.
- 14Quickly hornet-shoot.
Tips
- Shortcut #2 is quicker but can be harder to execute.
- Shortcut #1 may not work, leaving #2 as your only option.
- The shotgun is good for controllers that fly by really close.
- It is best to long-jump off of the highest point of the hilltop while running toward the flyer in Shortcut #2.
- Focus on vorts over alien controllers in Shortcut #2, as vorts can hurt you much faster.
- It's all downhill from here, provided you keep using effective strategies.
