Guide to defeating Gonarch in Half-Life: Opposing Force. Learn strategies for using explosives and the hornet gun to overcome this boss.
Walkthrough
- 1Near a dead HEV suit wearer, jump onto the "whoosh-thing" (a vehicle) and then jump off to land outside without taking damage. If you fail, quickrestore and retry.
- 2Follow Gonarch into the cave it entered.
- 3At the cave shaft, jump to the narrow ledge with a light crystal. Turn around, jump towards the light crystal across the shaft, and crouch as you fall to land in section c4a2b without damage.
- 4Section c4a2b: Gonarch Combat, Stage 3
- 5After reaching the floor, Gonarch will jump into a pit at the end of a short, slippery tunnel. Avoid falling off the edge.
- 6To skip killing Gonarch, you can drop down and use explosives to destroy the floor patch near the spiky plant cluster (the same one Gonarch destroys). However, this exposes you to Gonarch's acid and baby headcrabs.
- 7Move slowly into the tunnel. When you start sliding, stop halfway down by leaning on the "Move backward" key. You should become immobile unless you jump.
- 8Equip the hornet gun and fire hornets at a spot over the drop-off to hit Gonarch.
- 9If you don't hear damage sounds, try firing at different spots, including high-up ones, and adjust your position. Avoid sliding too close to the drop-off to prevent Gonarch from attacking you with acid.
- 10Once Gonarch changes position, it should be easier to score hits.
- 11If you struggle to hit Gonarch with hornets, use hand grenades or C4 satchel bombs. For satchels, detonate them as soon as they fall out of sight. You may need to jump before throwing and lean backward to avoid sliding.
- 12Hit Gonarch with explosives until it changes position, then switch back to the hornet gun. Continue firing at different spots and adjusting your position if necessary.
- 13After Gonarch is dead, turn on your flashlight and move forward. Fire hornets down the tunnel to kill any remaining baby headcrabs.
- 14Aim for the left side of the drop-off. As you fall, lean on the "Move backward" key to land on a small ledge above the floor.
- 15Use your flashlight to scan the floor for baby headcrabs and hornet-shoot them.
- 16Crouch-drop to the floor. Ensure all baby headcrabs are eliminated before collecting items.
- 17Collect the four armor batteries and the ammo canister.
- 18Locate the large hole in the floor created by Gonarch's explosion.
- 19If your health is below 100, carefully crouch-drop onto the edge of the hole's side area containing a health pool.
- 20Heal up, save your game, and then drop to the bottom of the hole to be teleported to the "Interloper" chapter.
Tips
- It takes fewer explosives to open the floor patch in this version than in the original game.
- When sliding down the tunnel, you can only stop yourself by hugging the sides of the tunnel after the first patch of slipperiness.
- After starting to slide, quicksave and then move as far forward as possible without sliding. Quicksave again. You can then jump and fire hornets at the alien plant clusters above Gonarch.
- If you can't get damage sounds, try firing hornets at various spots and changing your position.
- With satchel charges, it's easier to damage Gonarch as you can detonate them precisely.
- After Gonarch is dead, before sliding down the main tunnel, fire more hornets down it to kill baby headcrabs.
- You cannot land on the ledge after the drop-off; instead, crouch and lean backward as you fall, then run to the dark corner near the armor batteries.
