Navigate Part 42 of Half-Life: Opposing Force, using the hornet gun and snarks to defeat marines and aliens.
Walkthrough
- 1After defeating the initial enemies, find health and bullets near the mounted gun.
- 2Use the alien whoosh-thing (a device that propels you upwards) to reach the higher floor by running at it and jumping as you land on it.
- 3Turn right and crouch-walk forward until you hear fighting below.
- 4Wait for the fighting to stop, then use the hornet gun to sneak-shoot survivors or the assault rifle to finish them.
- 5Drop back down to the lower floor with the whoosh-thing. This is your last chance to access the two guard-opened supply rooms.
- 6Return to the whoosh-thing, use it to get back to the upper floor, and look into the lower area.
- 7If the vent shaft entrance near the back right corner is covered by a grating, shoot it with altfire hornets until it breaks.
- 8If snarks emerge from the shaft, wait for them to time out and explode before proceeding.
- 9Crouch down at the vent shaft entrance and use your flashlight to see the back wall.
- 10Shoot the back wall with altfire hornets until it breaks, releasing more snarks.
- 11Quickly run and hide behind the health pack crates until you no longer hear snark noises or explosions.
- 12Return to the vent shaft and move until you reach the broken-open area. Enter it to pick up snarks.
- 13Continue down the shaft past that point until you reach a grating blocking your path.
- 14Bash the grating with the crowbar.
- 15Turn and go back around the corner while marines shoot out a large part of the shaft.
- 16Get out your snarks, quicksave, turn the corner, and toss several snarks through the shaft opening to attack the marines below.
- 17If snarks are not thrown correctly, quickrestore and try again.
- 18Once all marines below are dead, return to the snark stash to resupply.
- 19To drop into the garage area without taking damage, carefully crouch-drop onto the back fender of the raised car, then to the floor. Alternatively, drop and use the first aid station to heal.
- 20Take the three armor batteries if needed.
- 21Go to the garage's small door, push it open, and quickly retreat to the other side of the garage as marines blow up the doorway and cover (press the cover button to crouch behind walls or objects) it with rubble.
- 22After explosions create a hole in the wall to the left of the door, quicksave.
- 23Get out your snarks and start jump-tossing them through the hole.
- 24Alternatively, jump-shoot hornets through the hole or fire hornets through debris holes past the small door.
- 25If snarks or hornets are ineffective, try shooting a marine through the debris holes with the pistol.
- 26Use the method described below to elevate yourself, then hit any survivors with RPG rockets.
- 27Once both marines are dead, use the two hanging control switches in the middle of the garage to find the one that operates the empty lift.
- 28Hit the control again and run onto the lift before it rises.
- 29To get through the wall hole, run to it from the raised lift without jumping.
- 30In the outdoor area, use the huge gun emplacement to blast the nearby metal door.
- 31Keep shooting the doorway until alien grunts stop appearing.
- 32Go through the doorway and down to look into a room where marines are fighting aliens.
- 33Use the hornet gun's altfire mode to kill the vort across the room on the same walkway, then retreat out of sight.
- 34When fighting stops, quicksave before returning to see into the room below.
- 35Sneak-shoot any remaining alien grunts or use the gauss gun.
- 36If grunts are not immediately visible, they are likely in the side room below the walkway.
- 37Go along the walkway to find a ladder, climb down, and kill the grunts.
- 38Check the side room for needed items, including gauss gun ammo found by crouch-walking into an open metal crate.
- 39Climb back up the ladder.
Tips
- To quickly switch between the assault rifle and hornet gun, use the "Last weapon used" key.
- When encountering the starting crowd, move slowly to the corner until you can barely see around it, then fire a bunch of hornets to sneak-shoot the vorts.
- When using the whoosh-thing, face the direction you want to be propelled before landing on it.
- If the vent shaft entrance is covered by a grating, use altfire hornets to break it.
- If snarks emerge from the vent shaft, wait for them to explode before proceeding.
- To get onto the top crate with a health pack, jump to it from the upper floor.
- You can get to health packs on lower crates by taking a running jump from a nearby cement chunk.
- When dealing with the garage doorway explosion, quickly push forward past the doorway right after opening it, jump-crouching over an explosive crate and running forward to the big gun before the explosions occur, though this method results in more damage.
- If the door opens glitchily, move out of its way and then go past it.
- When tossing snarks through the hole in the wall, they may be difficult to throw; quicksave and quickrestore if necessary.
- To drop into the garage area without damage, carefully crouch-drop onto the back fender of the raised car, then to the floor.
- If you cannot see alien grunts in the room below, they are likely in the side room below the walkway.
- Crouch-walk into the open metal crate to find gauss gun ammo.
