New to Deep Rock Galactic? Learn essential beginner tips for starting missions, understanding your role, and upgrading your gear to become a seasoned space dwarf miner.

This guide is intended to give basic gameplay advice to new players. Starting the game for the first time will launch the player immediately into a tutorial. This tutorial is optional and can be exited out of, it can also be revisited at any time using the Launch Tutorial button in the Miner's Manual, under Getting Started > Basics. The tutorial will teach you the basics of the game and specifically the [Gunner](https://deeprockgalactic.fandom.com/wiki/Gunner "Gunner") class.

Upon completing the short tutorial mission, you will be transported onto an orbital space station, the [Space Rig](https://deeprockgalactic.fandom.com/wiki/Space_Rig "Space Rig"). Here you can relax between [missions](https://deeprockgalactic.fandom.com/wiki/Missions "Missions"), purchase [vanity](https://deeprockgalactic.fandom.com/wiki/Accessory_Shop "Accessory Shop") and [equipment](https://deeprockgalactic.fandom.com/wiki/Equipment "Equipment") upgrades, begin and abort [assignments](https://deeprockgalactic.fandom.com/wiki/Assignments "Assignments"), or drink at the [Abyss Bar](https://deeprockgalactic.fandom.com/wiki/Abyss_Bar "Abyss Bar").

As a new player, you are required to complete a 10-mission-long assignment, named " [Conquer Hoxxes IV](https://deeprockgalactic.fandom.com/wiki/Assignments#Objective:_Conquer_Hoxxes_IV "Assignments")", before you are allowed to access the various planetary regions of [Hoxxes IV](https://deeprockgalactic.fandom.com/wiki/Hoxxes "Hoxxes").

Assignment missions are marked with a small white diamond !Icons Campaign Complete them to advance the assignment and receive [Crafting Resource](https://deeprockgalactic.fandom.com/wiki/Resources#Crafting.2FUpgrades "Resources") and ![Credit](https://deeprockgalactic.fandom.com/wiki/Credits "Credits")[Credit](https://deeprockgalactic.fandom.com/wiki/Credits "Credits") rewards that you can use to upgrade your equipment or purchase items from the Accessory Shop.

Once you have completed the "Conquer Hoxxes IV" assignment, you are free to do whatever you want. Visit the various Planetary Regions to mine crafting resources, complete more assignments to unlock new weapons and terminals, purchase cosmetic items to become a fancy [dwarf](https://deeprockgalactic.fandom.com/wiki/Dwarves "Dwarves"), or face challenging [mutators](https://deeprockgalactic.fandom.com/wiki/Missions#Mutators "Missions") for large [Experience](https://deeprockgalactic.fandom.com/wiki/Experience "Experience") and Credit rewards.
