Navigate the Outer Wall in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night! Learn how to defeat Doppleganger10, find the Soul of Wolf relic, and grab useful items like the Gladius.
Alright, so you've just entered the Outer Wall in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Right in front of you, there's a pot. Go ahead and smash it – you'll get a zircon. Don't get too excited about gems; they're mostly just for selling, and the zircon is pretty common. Save the really rare ones, like diamonds, for a special glitch later on. Now, ignore the path going down for now and take the one heading upwards to the left.
Once you're up the stairs, you'll see another pot on a platform. We can't reach that one just yet, so keep heading left. The next room has a couple of Axelord Knights – just take them out. After that, you'll enter a vertical area with two torches. If you need hearts, stand here and go back and forth between rooms; these torches drop big hearts that'll refill your meter nicely. To your left is a save room, and going up and left from there is where the boss is. If you've got the Watch sub-weapon, now's a great time to use it. Oh, and before you head to the boss, there's a table and chair on an incline between the save room and the previous area. Stand by the chair and press 'up' – Alucard will sit down, which is just a neat little detail.
Boss Fight: Doppleganger10
This boss is a copy of yourself, and it can be pretty tough if you don't use the Watch sub-weapon. The main reason it's tricky is that it reacts to your moves and counters them. Unlike other bosses with predictable patterns, this guy adapts. If you try using sub-weapons like the knife or axe, he'll either block with a shield or turn into mist to dodge. Get too close without your shield up, and he'll throw a knife at you. Spells like Summon Spirit? He'll just dodge with mist again. It's a real back-and-forth; your best bet is to use your sword for damage and your shield to block his knife attacks, combined with some smarts.
Strategy:
- The Watch Exploit: If you have the Watch sub-weapon, use it! It'll freeze the Doppleganger10, giving you a free pass to wail on him with your sword. This is the easiest way to win.
- Melee Combat: If you don't use the Watch, you'll need to be patient. Attack with your sword when you see an opening, and be ready to block his knife throws or dodge his mist form.
After you defeat him, you'll grab another Life Max Up. In the next room, you'll find a Gladius sword. It only gives +1 attack, but hey, equip it!
Now, head back out. You'll see an elevator to your right. There's also a path below to the right with a drop-down if you want to go back. If you carefully jump from the edge of that gap, you might make it across to break a pot containing another Life Max Up. Miss the jump, though, and you'll fall and have to find another way around. For now, let's head to the save point at the highest part of this vertical room. There are a bunch of enemies, but nothing too concerning.
After dealing with three musket men, you'll see the top of the elevator and an orb. We can grab a relic here, but first, we need to activate the elevator. The lever is a bit further up the tower. Go past the red door on the left, and you'll run into a continuous stream of Medusa Heads. Be careful: the tan ones can petrify you if they touch you. If that happens, mash left and right on the D-pad to break free.
While the Medusa Heads are spawning, you'll also encounter a Sword Lord with a shield and a big sword. He has a charge attack. Get on his level and attack him, but be ready to drop down to the platform below when he starts his charge, then come back up and repeat. Keep going up the tower; the next long set of stairs leads to the lever on the left. Hit the lever a few times, and you'll get a message saying the elevator is activated. Now, head back to where you saw the orb near the elevator.
Stand right by the elevator door. When you see the rope on the pulley moving, the elevator will come up. Once the door opens, you can grab the SOUL OF WOLF relic. With this, you can press R2 to transform into a wolf, which slowly drains your magic. It's not super useful right now, but it'll help you find some hidden upgrades later.
Let's head back up to where you activated the elevator. There's a vase there we need to grab before reaching the very top. It's above the lever. Move onto the platform in the middle, then transform into the wolf (double-tap and hold left on the D-pad, like you're trying to run with Richter). Jump towards the vase – you'll find a Heart Max Up! The wolf can reach it because it doesn't hit its head on the ceiling. Continue up the tower. You'll see a torch on the right with the Holy Bible sub-weapon and a save room on the left. If you were using the Watch, consider swapping it for the Bible now.
With the save done and a key relic in hand, it's time to hit the library. You'll need to backtrack to the top of the elevator area. Once you reach the elevator, it'll be open for you. Inside, use the D-pad to go up and down. You're currently at the third entry point, but we want to go to the second entry point, which is just the next one down. Go down the elevator one stop, then exit to your left and head into that red door.
