The Hittite Empire in Age of Empires IV was primarily located in Asia Minor, which is modern-day Turkey. At its greatest extent, the empire stretched from the Aegean coast of Anatolia in the west, eastward to the Euphrates River. It also extended southeastward into Syria, reaching as far south as Damascus, and south along the eastern Mediterranean coast of the Levant.

Historically, Hittite King Mursili sacked Babylon around 1600 B.C., though the region was not held by the Hittites. Historians are uncertain about the exact origins of the Hittites and how they arrived in Asia Minor. Linguistic studies suggest a probable European origin, with migration occurring south through the Balkans or past the eastern end of the Black Sea around 2000 B.C.
