Learn how to identify and leverage Dominant Timeframes in Age of Empires IV. Understand civilization strengths and weaknesses across different ages to develop winning strategies.

A Dominant Timeframe in Age of Empires IV is a period when a specific civilization, due to its available units and resources, is more powerful than others. This power is primarily determined by access to superior military units.

The game's Dominant Timeframe graphic illustrates this, with the X-axis representing time (Ages) and the Y-axis showing overall power (1-20). Units that dominate during each period are listed along the bottom of the X-axis.

Example: Early Bronze Age

In the early Bronze Age, Cavalry often dominate. This is because they require no prior upgrades upon reaching the Bronze Age and possess speed to outmaneuver most other units, except Chariot Archers and Chariots. Small groups of Cavalry can defeat small groups of these units. Chariot Archers require researching the wheel and a significant number (around a dozen) to effectively counter Cavalry.

Civilizations that can field Cavalry before opponents can counter them have an early Bronze Age Dominant Timeframe. For instance, Yamato's fast Villagers allow it to reach the Bronze Age quicker and produce cheaper Cavalry, giving it an advantage. Shang's cheap Villagers enable faster Bronze Age progression, also granting it an early Bronze Age Dominant Timeframe despite not having discounted Cavalry.

Example: Late Bronze Age

Later in the Bronze Age, ranged units like Composite Bowman and Chariot Archers become more powerful as players have time to mass them. Civilizations with bonuses for these units, such as Assyria, Hittite, and Minoa, gain a Dominant Timeframe in late Bronze. Phoenicia, with its woodcutting bonus, effectively gets Chariot Archers at a discount, creating a Dominant Timeframe in late Bronze.

Strategic Application

The Dominant Timeframe graph can guide strategy. For example, if playing as Shang against Babylonian, Shang has an advantage in the Tool Age and early Bronze Age but weakens in the late Iron Age. The Shang player should aim to attack during their Dominant Timeframe. Conversely, the Babylonian player should focus on early defense (walls, towers) to survive until their own Dominant Timeframe in the late Iron Age.
