Discover essential battle tips for Valkyria Chronicles, including unit survival, enemy defense, tank combat, and AI exploitation to achieve victory.
This section provides general battle tips for Valkyria Chronicles that don't fit neatly into other categories but are important for success.
Unit Survival: Units that drop to zero HP must be revived within 3 rounds or before an enemy touches them, or they are lost forever. While it's easy to avoid losing units, especially with frequent saving, losing specific characters can unlock bonus content like medals and secret characters. Some units, like Welkin, cause a Game Over if downed, while others, like Alicia, only if they die permanently. Some units, like the Shamrock pilot, may retreat instead of dying. If a mission is completed before a unit dies permanently, they will be fully healed after the map.
Weapon Advice: Grenades never cause counterattacks, but flamethrowers do. Flamethrowers are highly effective against cannons and bunkers.
Enemy Defense: Enemies crouching behind cover or crawling in grass gain significant defense boosts. Grenades or running them over with a tank can force them to stand, removing these boosts. Tanks do not damage enemies when running them over, but it will make them stand.
Tank Combat: Tanks are largely immune to infantry fire unless hit on their weak spots, which still have minimal impact. Tanks can perform machine gun combo attacks with ground troops, though their limited field of fire makes this more difficult.
Combat Strategy: Aim when the enemy is not actively shooting. Always enter targeting mode to turn rather than turning in real-time. Enemies have a harder time evading if you are out of their line of sight, though Aces may evade regardless. Saving before attempting to kill an Ace is recommended.
Movement and Positioning: Keep unit lines tight to conserve Action Points (AP) and ensure you reach objectives. Veering off can deplete AP prematurely.
Timing and Rhythm: Exploit the game's rhythm by timing actions to your advantage. Aim just before an enemy is about to fire again, or when they pause to reload. Continue moving to find a better position before ending your turn, ideally before the enemy fires again.
AI Exploitation: The game's AI is consistent; if enemy troop placements are the same, their actions will be predictable. Reloading a turn allows you to anticipate enemy actions and adjust your strategy accordingly.
