Walkthrough: A Pirate's Life

Trek through Tomb Raider (2013)'s 'A Pirate's Life' section. Survive treacherous coastlines, complete puzzles, and face combat against scavengers.

Welcome, survivor! This section will guide you through the treacherous coastal areas, where the remnants of ancient shipwrecks and desperate scavengers await. Keep your wits about you, conserve your resources, and prepare for both environmental puzzles and intense combat encounters.

Coastal Forest Approach

After the harrowing escape from the Solarii, you'll find yourself on the fringes of the Coastal Forest. Your primary objective here is to locate the rest of the Endurance crew. This area introduces you to basic traversal mechanics and scavenging.

• Scavenging: Immediately upon entering, look for Salvage Crates scattered near the path and along the cliff edges. These are crucial for upgrading your gear. You'll also find Arrows stuck in trees and targets; always pick these up.
• First Camp: You'll soon come across your first Day Camp. Interact with it to unlock fast travel and spend any Salvage you've collected. Prioritize upgrading your Recurve Bow for increased damage and faster draw speed.
• Hunting: The Coastal Forest is teeming with wildlife. Practice your hunting skills on Deer and Boar to gain XP and additional Salvage. Aim for headshots for instant kills and bonus XP.
• Optional Tomb: Keep an eye out for the entrance to the Tomb of the Unworthy (exact location: slightly off the main path, near a waterfall). This optional challenge involves a physics puzzle to access a Relic and a significant XP boost.

The Shipwreck Beach

This area is a labyrinth of rusted hulls and makeshift barricades, heavily patrolled by the Solarii. Stealth is often your best option here, but be prepared for direct confrontations.

• Initial Encounter: As you descend towards the beach, you'll spot a group of Solarii near a burning barrel. Use your Bow to take out the isolated enemies silently. A well-placed arrow to the head will ensure a quick kill.
• Cover System: Utilize the abundant cover (crates, broken ship parts) to your advantage. Pop out, fire, and retreat. Remember to blind-fire if you're pinned down.
• Explosive Barrels: Many combat arenas feature Explosive Barrels. Shoot these when enemies are nearby for massive area-of-effect damage. This is particularly effective against clustered groups.
• Finding the Flare Gun: Your objective is to reach a specific shipwreck. Inside, you'll discover the Flare Gun. This powerful, albeit limited, weapon is excellent for stunning and damaging multiple enemies, or for igniting flammable surfaces.
• Puzzle - The Mast Climb: To progress, you'll need to use your Climbing Axe to scale a broken mast. Look for the white-painted handholds. Be careful of falling debris.
• Collectibles:
  • GPS Caches: There are several GPS Caches hidden amongst the wreckage. Use your Survival Instincts (press R3/Right Stick) to highlight their locations.
  • Relics: One Relic, a Japanese Dog Tag, can be found inside a partially submerged cargo container near the northern edge of the beach.
  • Documents: A Solarii Journal entry is pinned to a wooden post near the main Solarii encampment.

The Coastal Caves

Following the beach, you'll enter a series of dark, damp caves. These are less about direct combat and more about environmental navigation and solving light puzzles.

• Torch Mechanics: You'll need to light your Torch (hold L2/LT and press R2/RT or Square/X) to navigate the darker sections. Be aware that holding the torch prevents you from using your bow.
• Rope Arrows: This section introduces the use of Rope Arrows. Look for rope-wrapped beams or anchor points. Shoot a rope arrow to create a zipline or pull down obstacles.
• Bridge Puzzle: You'll encounter a broken rope bridge. Use a Rope Arrow to create a new path across the chasm. Be precise with your aim.
• Wolf Den: Prepare for an encounter with a pack of Wolves in a small cavern. These creatures are fast and aggressive. Use your Shotgun (if acquired) or quick bow shots to dispatch them before they overwhelm you. Dodge frequently!
• Exit Strategy: The exit involves a short climb up a crumbling rock face, leading you further inland towards the Mountain Temple.
