Begin your State of Decay journey with our walkthrough! Learn combat, scavenging, and early missions like 'Find Help' and 'Survey the area' in Mt. Tanner.
Hey there! Welcome to the wild world of State of Decay. This guide is going to walk you through the game, starting with the very basics. We'll cover missions, how things work, and give you some pointers along the way. Think of this as your friendly guide to surviving the zombie apocalypse!
- 1Mission: Find Help
Right when you boot up the game, you're playing as Marcus and need to help out Ed, who's getting swarmed by zombies. Use your left stick to move over to Ed and press “X to start attacking the zombies. Once they're down or kneeling, you can perform a finisher move to take them out for good. After that, you'll get directions to the Ranger's Station, marked as a blue circle on your mini-map. You can either run straight there, fighting off any zombies that get in your way, or you can sneak by holding the B button to crouch. If you need to make a quick getaway, sprinting (hold LB + your direction) is an option, but be mindful that it drains your stamina. Once you reach the Ranger Station, you'll chat with Thomas Ritter. He'll tell you to climb the water tower out back to get a lay of the land and then search the nearby cabins for any other survivors.
- 2Mission: Survey the area
The water tower is just behind the Ranger Station. Head out the back door and find the ladder. Press up to start climbing. Once you reach the top, the survey mission will kick off, showing you a progress bar for how much of the area you still need to scout. Keep your LT button held down to survey, and then move your aim over any question marks you see. This will give you a description of what you're looking at. Keep scanning the map until you've found everything. As you're heading down, you'll hear some gunshots in the distance, and a new mission will pop up, marked by another blue circle on your mini-map indicating the source of the noise. Don't jump on that one just yet! Instead, pull up your map (press the back button) and find the other mission Thomas Ritter gave you: sweeping the cabins for survivors. You can click on that blue circle on the map to set it as your destination. Follow it until you reach the first cabin.
- 3Mission: Search for Cabins
Inside the cabin, you might find no one home, but there will be items to scavenge. Hold down the “Y button to search the items that are glowing. Once you're done searching, it'll either tell you that nothing was found or show you what was there, which you can then pick up. You can also speed up the searching process by holding LB + Y, but be aware that this can create a lot of noise, potentially attracting zombies. Keep searching until you've checked everything in the room. Marcus and Ed will then have a chat about whether to keep searching cabins or head towards those gunshots.
