State of Decay 2: Considering a new base? We break down the pros and cons of each major base, from the cramped Church of the Ascension to the spacious Snyder's Trucking Warehouse, to help you pick the best home for your survivors.

Alright, so you've been playing State of Decay for a bit, and you're probably realizing that your starting spot just isn't cutting it anymore. Maybe you're running out of room for supplies, or perhaps the zombies are just walking right over your defenses. It's time to think about upgrading to a bigger, better base! But with so many options, which one is the right fit for your community? Let's break down the main bases you'll encounter and figure out where you should set up shop next.

Here are the main bases you can establish in State of Decay:

  • Church of the Ascension
  • Kirkman Residence
  • McReady Farmhouse
  • The Alamo
  • The Savini House
  • Snyder’s Trucking Warehouse
  • Trumball County Fairgrounds

Just a heads-up, the Ranger's Station isn't really on this list because you can't upgrade it or move your main base back there, so we're focusing on the ones you can really build up.

Church of the Ascension Base

Location: Spencer’s Mill

This base comes with a Bedroom, Kitchen, and Watchtower already built. You get 3 slots for new buildings, 1 parking spot, and can set up 4 outposts. Storage is pretty limited: 25 food, 25 medicine, 25 ammo, 50 construction, and 25 fuel. To move in, you'll need 20 construction materials and 5 survivors.

Pros: Honestly, the only reason to pick this base is if you're looking for a serious challenge. It's definitely not for the faint of heart.

Cons: This is pretty much the worst base you can get. It's way too small and a nightmare to defend. Scavenging is tough because it can't hold many supplies. If you decide to build essential facilities like a medical base and a machine shop, you'll only have one slot left for anything else. Plus, with few buildings around the edges, you can't effectively use outposts to protect your base, leaving you wide open to zombie hordes.

Overall: I really wouldn't recommend this base. If you're playing the original game, try to move to a better base as soon as you possibly can.

Kirkman Residence

Location: Spencer’s Mill, just south of the Church of Ascension

This spot offers a Bedroom, Kitchen, and Workshop. You've got 3 building slots plus a spot for a watchtower. There are 2 parking spots and you can set up 6 outposts. Storage is decent: 50 food, 50 medicine, 50 ammo, 100 construction, and 50 fuel. You'll need 30 building materials and 8 survivors to claim it (or 6 for the Breakdown DLC).

Pros: With outposts, you can lock down not only your base but also most of Spencer’s Mill. It’s a solid defensive position.

Cons: The workshop isn't upgradeable. This means if you want a machine shop or a munitions shop, you'll have to sacrifice one of your valuable building slots.

Overall: It’s an okay base. It's a great choice if you want to completely scavenge Spencer’s Mill before heading over to Marshall.

McReady Farmhouse

Location: Central Region

This farmhouse comes with a Bedroom, Bunkhouse, Kitchen, and Storage. You get 3 building slots plus a watchtower. There are 3 parking spots and you can place 6 outposts. Storage is quite generous: 80 food, 80 medicine, 80 ammo, 130 construction, and 80 fuel. Moving in requires 30 construction materials and 8 people (5 for the Breakdown DLC).

Pros: This base is fantastic for larger survivor groups. Plus, if you're good at driving through the fields, you can make quick trips to Spencer’s Mill or Marshall for scavenging runs.

Cons: Similar to the church, it's kind of isolated with not many spots nearby to place outposts for defense. You might be able to get one in the barn to stop a single horde, but multiple hordes will likely break through. It can also be a hassle if you want to call scavengers to pick up supplies, as they often end up needing your help.

Overall: The Farmhouse is best suited for experienced players or those who enjoy a bit more of a challenge.

The Alamo

Location: Downtown Marshall, near the supermarket

This base includes a Kitchen, Storage, and a Watchtower. You get 3 building slots plus another Watchtower. It has 3 parking spots and can support 4 outposts. Storage capacity is 65 food, 65 medicine, 65 ammo, 90 construction, and 65 fuel. You'll need 20 building supplies and 5 people to move in (no population requirement for the Breakdown DLC).

Pros: Its biggest advantage is its location. It's right near tons of great scavenging spots, and the storage capacity is large enough to hold all your loot. If your population is still small, this is a good place to start. It's also securable with outposts.

Cons: It's a small base with limited building space and only 4 outpost slots, which can feel restrictive.

Overall: This is a great temporary base if you want to stock up on supplies or grow your population before moving to a larger, more permanent home.

The Savini House

Location: West side of Marshall

This base comes with a Bedroom, Library, Kitchen, and Watchtower. You have 3 building slots, 3 parking spots, and can set up 6 outposts. Storage is 50 food, 50 medicine, 50 ammo, 100 construction, and 50 fuel. To move in, you'll need 30 building materials and 8 survivors (or 5 for the Breakdown DLC).

Pros: It's easy to defend and situated in a prime spot for scavenging. Having the watchtower already built makes it feel secure very quickly, and it seems like you have enough slots for the best facilities.

Cons: It's best suited for a smaller group, 8 survivors or less. You can't upgrade the watchtower into a shooting tower.

Overall: If you've got a small crew (8 or fewer), this is arguably the best base in the game.

Snyder’s Trucking Warehouse

Location: Far west side of Marshall

This massive base includes a Bedroom, Storage facility, and a Machine Shop right off the bat. You get a whopping 5 building slots plus a watchtower. There are 4 parking spots and you can deploy 8 outposts. Storage is huge: 110 food, 110 medicine, 110 ammo, 190 construction, and 110 fuel. Moving in requires a hefty 50 building materials and 12 survivors (10 for the Breakdown DLC).

Pros: This base is incredibly easy to secure. You only need two outposts to cover the main routes leading to the base (the gas station to its right and the construction warehouse across the street). That leaves you with 6 more outposts to cover other areas or bolster your defenses even further.
