Getting started in Garbage

When you first roll into the Garbage, you might stumble upon Yurik getting ambushed by a few bandits. Your PDA will initially mark them as neutral loners. You don't have to save Yurik, there's no urgent PDA alert for it, but doing so earns you an ally who'll help out later, especially when you need to Respond to the call for help, which pops up not long after.

Mission: Respond to the call for help

Chat with Bes, and he'll let you know that bandits are trying to take over Garbage. Bes and his crew had a rough encounter earlier and are expecting trouble to return. He'll ask for your help to fend them off. If you agree, you'll wrap up the Respond to the call for help mission and get the Repel the bandit raid mission.

Before or after talking to Bes, take a peek inside the small building nearby. It's got three metal boxes stuffed with ammunition, bandages, and maybe a medkit or two. Near this building is a tall tower with a busted ladder. Climb up (or find a way to shoot the crates on top), and you'll get a nice shower of ammo – around 1000 rounds of 9x19mm PB1s.

Missions: Repel the bandit raid & Kill the bandit leader

Shortly after accepting the first mission from Bes, and also getting the second one from Trader, you'll see a stalker running towards you. He'll tell Bes that bandits are on their way. This next part can be a bit hairy – you're up against about 8 bandits and their leader, who you need to kill for the Kill the bandit leader mission. Luckily, Bes and his guys will join the fight, evening the odds a bit. Just remember, to complete the mission, all bandits must be dead, and Bes must survive. If Bes goes down, the mission fails.

As soon as you've spoken to Bes, get into position. The bandits will come from the west, across the scrap-yard. I've found that using the wrecked trailer for cover and starting the fight by tossing a grenade or two at them works wonders. Once you've thinned their numbers, you can move in to finish off the rest. After you've dealt with all the bandits, the mission updates, and you'll be prompted to talk to Bes again. The side mission, Kill the bandit leader, will be completed during the battle if the leader bites the dust.

Bes will reward you with 2000 RU, and that mission concludes. He might share some info about Garbage and himself, but nothing critical. You'll need to head back to Sidorovich in Cordon to get your reward for (and complete) the Kill the bandit leader mission. You can do this now or later; you'll still be able to meet Seriy, finish up missions at Agroprom, and return to Sidorovich eventually. If you do return to Sidorovich, he'll give you an Akm 74/2U (with a loaded magazine) and 150 rounds of 5.45x39mm BP. If you plan on selling the Akm, make sure to unload it first to grab those still-rare 5.45x39mm rounds.

The camp at the vehicle scrap-yard often gets hit by bandits, and you might even face more right after finishing the Repel the bandit raid mission. If Bes happens to die during this second wave, be sure to check his body (and the area around him). He's carrying a unique rifle – the Akm 74/2U Special, which is essentially an Akm 74/2U with an integrated silencer. Since you're already here, you might want to grab another silencer if you fancy; check out this page for instructions on how to get one.

Mission: Meet with Seriy, continued

Time to head over to Seriy and get that info. As you get closer to the central hangar (north of the scrap-yard in Garbage), you'll get a transmission from him. He's under attack by bandits and could really use some help. Looks like you're stepping up to the plate again! As you approach the hangar, you'll likely hear a lot of gunfire.

Inside the hangar, you'll find Seriy and some other stalkers fighting off bandits. Help them out, and Seriy will call you over for a chat. He'll thank you with 2500 RU and mention that a friend of his, named Mole, supposedly found a stash belonging to Strelok. The Meet with Seriy mission will then be completed, and you'll get a new one: Get information about Strelok.
