Master demon negotiation in Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux. Learn about personality types, dialogue choices, and Sub App strategies to recruit demons and gain items.

This section explains the intricacies of demon negotiation in Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux. Successfully negotiating with demons allows you to recruit them into your party, obtain items, or gain Macca. Understanding demon personalities and dialogue choices is key to success.

Demon Personalities and Dialogue:

Demons have different personalities, and their reactions to your dialogue choices vary. For example, a demon with the Girly personality might react differently to the same statement depending on its specific type (e.g., Lilim vs. Leanan Sidhe). Generally, demons of the same personality type will favor similar responses.

You must pass two questions to reach the negotiation phase. While there are generally liked answers for each personality type, there's a small chance a liked answer might anger a demon. This requires trial and error to learn.

Negotiation Outcomes and Sub Apps:

An unliked answer can lead to several outcomes:

  • The demon likes your answer: Proceed to the next question or request an item/recruitment.
  • The demon does not like your answer:
    • They might forgive you randomly. This does not count towards the Relax Spray Sub App's usage.
    • If you have the Relax Spray Sub App equipped, they may forgive you once per negotiation. If not, the negotiation ends. The demon might leave, return you to the combat selection menu, or get a free attack.
    • They might hate your answer, resulting in a free attack round for the demon party. This cannot be smoothed over with Relax Spray.
    • They might be disgusted or scared by your answer (e.g., telling a Girly demon you don't like women). The demon will leave the battle.

After two questions, if the demon is on friendly terms, you'll have the option to 'Try negotiating' or 'Stay quiet'. 'Stay quiet' may result in the demon giving you an item/Macca or healing your party before leaving. 'Try negotiating' usually leads to the main request phase.

Request Phase:

If you select 'Try negotiating', you can choose:

  • Be my demon: The demon will ask for things like HP, MP, items, or Macca. The amount requested is influenced by your alignment (Opposites ask for more, same alignment asks for less, Neutral is in-between). You can refuse 2-3 times before the demon gets angry. Relax Spray can help if not already used.
  • I want an item: The demon gives you an item, and the battle ends.
  • I want Macca: The demon gives you Macca, and the battle ends.
  • I don't want anything: The demon leaves, and the battle ends.

Demon Joining and Rewards:

If you meet a demon's demands for recruitment:

  • The demon joins your party. If you have a 'Garnish' Sub App equipped, you'll receive an additional item. If your demon stock is full, the demon leaves but will join automatically if you open a slot and meet them again.
  • The demon might decide not to join (higher chance for opposite alignment demons). The Tea Amity Sub App guarantees recruitment in this case, and Garnish will provide its bonus. If they don't join, they leave the battle.
Tips
  • The Relax Spray Sub App allows one negotiation error without ending the conversation.
  • The Tea Amity Sub App guarantees a demon will reconsider joining if they initially refuse.
  • The Garnish Sub App provides an extra item when a demon joins your party.
  • Pay attention to demon personalities and dialogue options to learn preferred responses.
  • Alignment influences the amount of Macca or HP/MP demons request.
