Learn how alignment works and how to manipulate it in Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux, plus understand battle parameters like Atk, Def, and Ag.

Alignment Explained:

  • Demon alignment cannot be changed.
  • Your character's alignment is influenced by dialogue choices during specific points in the story.
  • Choices marked (Neutral) do not shift your alignment but maintain your current position on the Law-Neutral-Chaos axis.
  • To shift from Chaos to Neutral, you must consistently choose Law answers. To shift from Law to Neutral, you must consistently choose Chaos answers.
  • Alignment functions on a scale from -12 (Chaos) to +12 (Law), with 0 being Neutral. Law answers add positive points, Chaos answers add negative points.

Alignment Manipulation Trick:

After completing at least one Faerie land establishment EX Mission and reaching Eridanus story-progress wise, you can find a goblin west of the High Pixie who gives out Faerie land EX Missions. Repeatedly talking to this goblin can trigger dialogue options that allow for alignment manipulation.

  • Dialogue Option 1: "What will you do?"
    • Watch (Neutral)
    • Help (Law)
  • Dialogue Option 2: "Ooh, lucky me! I found something!"
    • Good for you. (Neutral)
    • Hand it over. (Chaos)

Using combinations like Law + Neutral, or Neutral + Chaos, allows you to subtly shift your alignment. Shifting from one extreme to the other (e.g., just turned Chaos to just Law) requires 18 opposite-alignment answers.

The chance of these dialogue options appearing is equal to your main character's Lu (Luck) stat value (X%). In New Game+, this chance is supposedly (X+15)%.

Battle Parameters Explained:

In battle, pressing the Y button brings up a display showing changes to battle parameters for each character. These parameters can be modified by spells and affect combat performance. Each parameter can be adjusted between a minimum of -4 and a maximum of +4.

  • Atk (Attack Power): Increases or decreases attack power. Spells like Tarukaja and Luster Candy increase it, while Tarunda and War Cry decrease it. Each +1 adds 12.5% extra damage, up to 50% at +4. Each -1 decreases damage by 12.5%, down to -50% at -4.
  • Def (Defense): Decreases or increases damage taken. Spells like Rakukaja and Luster Candy increase it, while Rakunda and Acid Breath decrease it. Each +1 decreases damage taken by 12.5%, up to 50% at +4. Each -1 increases damage taken by 12.5%, up to 50% at -4.
  • Ag (Hit/Evasion Chance): Affects the chance to hit and evade. Spells like Sukukaja and Luster Candy increase it, while Sukunda and Fog Breath decrease it. Each +1 increases hit/evasion chance by 12.5%, up to 50% at +4. Each -1 decreases hit/evasion chance by 12.5%, down to -50% at -4.
  • Prot (Tetraja Effect): Displays whether the Tetraja effect is active (indicated by a white circle). Tetraja protects against one Expel or Curse-based instant kill.

A status ailment icon will appear below Prot if the target is afflicted by one.

Example: If a character has Atk +3, Def -1, Ag +2, and Prot (), they deal 37.5% more damage, take 12.5% more damage, hit and evade 25% more often, and are protected by Tetraja.
