Precision Rendezvous & Docking

Prepare Your Target: Ensure your target vessel is in a stable orbit and has a docking port. For initial practice, a stationary target like a space station module is ideal.

Match Orbits: Launch your intercept vessel into an orbit that closely matches the target's inclination and altitude. Use maneuver nodes to plan burns that will bring your orbital parameters as close as possible.

Initiate Intercept: Once orbits are matched, create a small difference in orbital period between your vessel and the target. Burning prograde will raise your apoapsis and slow your orbit, causing you to fall behind the target. Burning retrograde will lower your periapsis and speed up your orbit, causing you to catch up. Aim for a slow, controlled approach.

Close the Distance: As you get closer, use short, precise burns to adjust your relative velocity. The goal is to have a very low relative speed when you are within a few kilometers of the target.

Align for Docking: Use your vessel's RCS (Reaction Control System) thrusters to fine-tune your position and orientation. Align your docking ports using the camera controls and translation keys (H, J, K, L, I, N).

Final Approach: Move slowly towards the target, making small corrections as needed. Keep your relative velocity as close to zero as possible.

Docking: Once the docking ports are aligned and you are very close, engage the docking port's magnetic attraction (if available) or gently bump the ports together.
