Talk to the Mortician about Dead Sheep and Missing Dead Bodies

Learn how to investigate Jake's murder in Divinity: Original Sin. Uncover clues, question suspects like Roberts, Cecil, Esmeralda, Aureus, and Evelyn, and find Jake's body.

To gain more information about Jake's missing body, speak to the undertaker, Roberts, who is located upstairs in the Mortician's Morgue, south of the cemetery and northwest of the Tavern. You can find his ledger, "Robert's Ledger," on the lower floor of the morgue. You will need to break down a door or pick its lock to access it. The key to this door is upstairs and can be stolen; it is called the Mortician's Chest Key and unlocks both doors in the house and the Mortician's Chest.

Reading the ledger allows you to ask Roberts about suspects in Jake's murder. If you don't have the ledger, you can play a Rock-Paper-Scissors mini-game with Roberts through dialogue options. Winning this game reveals that he allowed the body to be stolen.

Roberts names four suspects: Mayor Cecil, Esmeralda (Jake's wife), Captain Aureus, and Evelyn (the doctor's apprentice). Examining the dialogue options provides clues as to why he suspects each person. You should speak to each suspect if you haven't already.

First, go to the Marketplace and talk to Bertia, who has lost her sheep (quest "Little Bo Bertia Lost Her Sheep"). When you inform her about finding her dead sheep, she will go to Captain Aureus to complain about Roberts, the Undertaker and sheep thief. Follow her to Aureus' office. You can ask Aureus about the other suspects and report your suspicions. However, accusing Aureus will result in him yelling at you and a loss of Attitude points. You can inform Aureus about Roberts' involvement in conspiring to sell Jake's body, leading to Roberts' arrest.

Roberts hinted that Jake's body might be used to summon the undead, a problem the Legion is currently facing. Investigate this lead.

Speaking to Mayor Cecil, another suspect, yields no useful information. However, if you break into his private quarters, you can steal a pair of "Smelly Shoes." Showing these to Murphy the dog will indicate that Cecil is unlikely to be the perpetrator, leaving the investigation at an impasse.

Confront Esmeralda

Confront Esmeralda in her Shop with the incriminating items (the book and knife) you found. She claims the book belongs to her husband and the knife was used for butchering swine, plausible explanations suggesting she may not be guilty. Esmeralda mentions that Jake had become dark and brooding recently and strongly suggests investigating Evelyn, the Healer's apprentice, whom she believes is evil and responsible for Jake's death.
