After visiting the Town Hall, exit and head northeast. Pass through the Legionnaires camp and continue east to the "Legion Headquarters." Here you can speak with "Aureus," the Captain of the Legionnaires, and "Arhu," the mage you previously met on the beach.
Aureus is arrogant but provides useful information and quests. He directs you to the King Crab Tavern as the crime scene and grants permission to enter. Through conversation, you will receive the quests: "The Undead Scourge," "The Scaredy Pact," "The Lost Archaeologist," and "Legionnaires at the Church." Aureus also sells Man-at-Arms skillbooks.
Upstairs, find "Arhu," who has transformed into a cat. He will discuss the murder and the crime scene. If you mention hearing about a failed experiment by Arhu, you will receive the quest "Arhu's Failed Experiment." He will also give you the "Arhu SparkMaster 5000 Universal Controller" and mention a manual for it is in his room. Arhu sells Geomancer and Pyrokinetic skillbooks.
The quests from Aureus and Arhu are temporarily set aside as they often lead outside of town, and your party may not be ready. The next step is to begin the murder investigation at the crime scene.
Recruit a Potential Party Member
You can recruit several companions: Jahan and Madora (original game), and Wolgraff and Bairdotr (DLC "The Bear and the Burglar"). Companions add flavor, opinions, and their own quests. You can have a total of four party members.
Recruiting the Fair Maiden Bairdotr
If you have the DLC, outside the Legion Headquarters, you'll find a cage containing "Bairdotr," guarded by Tullia and Virius. Inquiring about Bairdotr's arrest leads to dialogue, after which you can choose to release her, and she joins your party. Bairdotr is a Ranger from Homeforest, raised by bears, and tutored by Jareth. She seeks to rescue Jareth from Attenberah, who has corrupted the wildlife of Homeforest, initiating the quest "The Wild Woman and the Renegade." Bairdotr's dagger and bow are on a nearby bench.
Go to the King Crab Tavern and Recruit Another Potential Party Member
Head east from the Market to the King Crab Tavern to begin the murder investigation. On the first floor, you can recruit "Madora," a Knight, who is a valuable addition to a four-member party.
Proceed to the southwest side of the first floor to the murder scene. The guard will allow entry if you have permission from Captain Aureus.
