Learn why the Prison Depths in Dead Cells is skippable, its enemy types like Hammer and Corpse Fly, and its single Scroll of Power. Discover the best strategy to bypass it for the Ossuary.
The Prison Depths is a transitional level in Dead Cells, acting as a link between The Ramparts/The Promenade of the Condemned/The Ancient Sewers and The Ossuary. It is notable for being largely skippable, as its sole exit leads to The Ossuary, which can also be accessed directly from The Promenade of the Condemned. Unless you are specifically farming for cells, there is little incentive to explore the Prison Depths due to its single Scroll of Power and challenging enemy encounters.
The level itself is fairly generic, lacking unique mechanics. It features environmental hazards like spikes and swinging balls, but the majority of the gameplay involves combat encounters in multi-level rooms. The level design is compact, preventing overwhelming numbers of enemies at once, but the individual foes can still pose a significant threat.
Many enemies in the Prison Depths are recurring from earlier or later levels. The unique threats introduced here are the Hammer and the Corpse Fly. The Hammer is a tanky enemy that can summon Corpse Flies or drop proximity bombs, making it difficult to approach. Freezing its movement or using ranged attacks is recommended. Corpse Flies are small, numerous enemies summoned by the Hammer, similar to Buzzcutters but weaker. They can easily overwhelm players if not dealt with quickly.
Other notable enemies include:
- Zombie
- Undead Archer
- Kamikaze
- Fogger: These enemies create large areas of fog, obscuring vision and potentially leading to ambushes by other dangerous foes like Slashers and Lacerators. Locating and eliminating Foggers quickly is crucial.
- Lacerator: Features a spin attack; attack before and after the spin, and dodge when it's charging.
- Slasher: Has a three-hit combo with a long-reaching final hit. Dodge roll through its attacks and strike from behind, being aware of its ability to turn mid-combo.
