Tournaments were introduced to Clash Royale in the July 4th, 2016 content update. They can be created by any player who is level 8 or higher and is not currently opening a tournament chest. Creating a tournament requires gems, with the cost varying based on the tournament size. There are four sizes of tournaments, each dictating the quantity of rewards from tournament chests and the maximum number of players that can join.

When creating a tournament, you can set a custom name and description, and optionally a password for private access. You can also choose whether the tournament appears in your Clan's tournament tab. All tournaments run for one hour before a winner is chosen. A two-hour preparation time allows players to get ready, though the host can end this early to start the tournament.

Tournament Sizes and Prizes

100 Gem Tournament

Costs 100 Gems to create, allowing up to 50 players. Prizes include cards and gold: 3rd place gets 10 cards, 2nd place gets 15 cards, and 1st place gets 25 cards. The top 10 players are guaranteed a prize.

500 Gem Tournament

Costs 500 Gems to create, allowing up to 100 players. Prizes include cards and gold: 3rd place gets 40 cards, 2nd place gets 60 cards, and 1st place gets 100 cards. The top 20 players are guaranteed a prize.

2,000 Gem Tournament

Costs 2,000 Gems to create, allowing up to 200 players. Prizes include cards and gold: 3rd place gets 160 cards, 2nd place gets 240 cards, and 1st place gets 400 cards. The top 40 players are guaranteed a prize.

10,000 Gem Tournament

Costs 10,000 Gems to create, allowing up to 1,000 players. Prizes include cards and gold: 3rd place gets 800 cards, 2nd place gets 1,200 cards, and 1st place gets 2,000 cards. The top 200 players are guaranteed a prize.

Tournament chests can also guarantee Rare and Epic cards, with larger chests potentially yielding Legendary cards.

Joining Tournaments

Players must be level 8 or higher and not have an active tournament chest to join. Joining tournaments is free. You can leave a tournament at any time, but progress and potential prizes will be lost. Clan members can see tournaments hosted by clanmates if enabled. Other tournaments can be found by searching their name or tag.

How Tournaments Work

Tournaments function similarly to regular battles. Players initiate a battle from the tournament screen, matching against another player searching for a match. Winning earns tournament trophies, while losing deducts them, affecting leaderboard rankings. Tournaments use standard tournament rules, capping card levels to ensure fair play. Overtime lasts for 3 minutes, which is 2 minutes longer than standard battles.

Challenges

Challenges are located in the Tournaments tab under the Challenges sub-tab. Joining a challenge requires a Gem fee, after which players compete against others. Winning more battles increases the rewards in the challenge prize chest, with a maximum of 12 wins possible. Losing 3 times results in elimination from the challenge, with prizes awarded based on the wins achieved up to that point. Even with no wins, a small prize is guaranteed.

Classic Challenge

Entry fee: 10 Gems. Maximum prize: 100 cards and 2,000 gold.

Grand Challenge

Entry fee: 100 Gems. Maximum prize: 1,100 cards and 22,000 gold.

Joining Challenges

To join a challenge, select it from the tournament tab and pay the Gem fee. You will then be placed in the challenge and can start battling by hitting the Battle button. A progress bar tracks wins, and three boxes track losses. The challenge ends with 12 wins for the maximum prize or upon incurring 3 losses. Card levels and King Level are capped at tournament standard levels for fairness, and overtime is extended. There is no time limit to complete a challenge.
