2v2 battles pop up every other weekend as part of the Team Clan Chest event. They also got a big boost in the June 2017 update, adding a 2v2 Draft mode, friendly battles, and support for 2v2 challenges. Now, there's even a permanent main 2v2 mode where you can team up with a friend or clanmate. You'll still earn chests and crowns, which is awesome for your Clan and Crown Chests, and you get battle gold too. The best part? No trophy risk like in the regular 1v1 ladder!
