Your friend's guide to Borderlands 2's 'The Road to Sanctuary' mission. Learn how to get a vehicle, fight Nomads, and rescue Reiss to reach Sanctuary.

Alright, so you've just finished up the intro stuff and now it's time to actually hit the road and make your way to Sanctuary. This first real mission, 'The Road to Sanctuary,' is where things start to open up a bit. Don't worry, I'll walk you through it!

Walkthrough
  1. 1
First things first, head through the travel point to get to an area called Three Horns - Divide. As soon as you get a little ways in, a bridge above you is going to get blown sky-high. Bummer, right? This means we need to find a different way to Sanctuary. Luckily, that mysterious woman from earlier pops up and suggests we grab a vehicle from a nearby Catch-A-Ride station. Follow the path that's now below where the bridge used to be. Keep an eye out for Bullymongs – those big ape-like creatures – as you make your way to the vehicle spawner.
  2. 2
So, you get to the Catch-A-Ride, but surprise! You can't actually use it because you don't have access. Typical. But hey, our mysterious friend has a plan. She mentions a disabled robot nearby that has something she needs to hack the Catch-A-Ride. The catch? The camp where this robot is located is swarming with bandits, and you'll meet a new type here: the Nomad.
  3. 3
These Nomads aren't the super-tough ones you'll face later, but they can still be a bit of a hassle. Their heads are usually covered, making them a bit tricky to hit, and they tend to move around a lot. Your job is to clear out the bandit camp. Once it's safe, find and loot the disabled robot. Grab whatever it is you need and head back to the station. Place the device in the Catch-A-Ride, and wait for the woman to work her magic and hack the machine. Once it's ready, hop in! The one with the rocket launcher is usually the best bet.
  4. 4
Now, take a moment to get a feel for the vehicle's controls. It can be a little wonky at first, but you'll get the hang of it. You'll need to use it to jump the gap where the bridge used to be. Quick tip: killing enemies while you're in a vehicle gives you less experience than if you were on foot. So, if you're aiming for maximum XP, it's often better to hop out and fight on foot. After the jump, drive through the canyon, running over any Bullymongs that get in your way, until you emerge into a large, open area.
  5. 5
Your next objective is to head towards a waypoint marker. Use the intercom there to try and get through a gate, but you'll be told you need to rescue someone out in the area first. As you make your way to the next marker, you'll have to ditch your vehicle, so do that and continue on foot. You'll find an ECHO recorder on the ground. Listen to it – it belongs to someone named Reiss, and he mentions heading through the Marrowfields.
  6. 6
Good news! The Marrowfields is right next to where you are. Keep moving forward, and you'll eventually find Reiss. He's in a bit of trouble, being attacked by three Psychos. Take them out, then chat with Reiss. He'll tell you that the power core for the gate has been stolen. This is also where you get your first optional objective: kill 20 Bloodshot bandits in the nearby camp. You were going to go there anyway to get the power core, so this works out perfectly.
  7. 7
Since the bandits aren't just going to hand over the power core, you might as well focus on clearing out the camp and fulfilling that optional objective while you're at it. You'll run into a mix of Nomads, Marauders, and Psychos in there, so you should be pretty familiar with how to handle them by now. Once you've dealt with everyone and found the power core, grab it and head back to the gate you couldn't pass earlier. Now you'll be able to get through! Travel into Sanctuary and talk to the guy waiting there. He'll ask you to place the power cell, and then you can talk to him again to wrap up the mission.
Tips
  • When you get your first vehicle, the one with the rocket launcher is generally more useful than other options.
  • Killing enemies from a vehicle grants less XP than fighting them on foot. If you're focused on leveling up, consider dismounting for combat.
  • The optional objective to kill 20 Bloodshot bandits is easily completed while you're already in the bandit camp retrieving the power core.
  • Level 7: 948 XP, $19, Assault Rifle or Shotgun
