The insidious forces of Chaos in Vermintide 2 don't just throw hordes of enemies at you; they also inflict various curses and corruption that can severely impact your team's performance. Understanding and mitigating these mechanics is crucial for success, especially on higher difficulties like Legend and Cataclysm.

Understanding Corruption

Corruption is a pervasive debuff that reduces your maximum health. It's represented by a purple overlay on your health bar. The more corruption you accumulate, the less health you have available. This makes every hit more dangerous and reduces your survivability significantly.

Sources of Corruption:

• Corruption Pustules: These glowing purple sacs are found throughout various maps. Standing near them or destroying them without proper precautions will inflict corruption.
  • Strategy: Prioritize destroying Pustules from a distance with ranged weapons. If melee is necessary, ensure your team is aware and ready to mitigate the incoming corruption.
• Boss Abilities: Many bosses, particularly those aligned with Nurgle, have abilities that inflict corruption. For example, the Bile Troll's vomit attack or the Plague Monk's cloud.
  • Strategy: Learn boss attack patterns and dodge or block corruption-inflicting abilities. Maintain distance when possible.
• Special Enemies: Certain special enemies, like the Blightstormer's vortex or the Globadier's gas, can apply corruption over time.
  • Strategy: Focus fire on these specials to eliminate them quickly before they can spread too much corruption.
• Environmental Hazards: Some maps feature environmental hazards, such as the toxic pools in Blightreaper or the gas vents in Skittergate, that cause corruption.
  • Strategy: Pay attention to your surroundings and avoid standing in hazardous areas.

Managing Corruption

While corruption can be a persistent threat, there are several ways to manage and even remove it:

Healing and Cleansing:

• Medical Supplies:
  • Healing Draughts: These instantly restore a significant portion of your health but do NOT remove corruption. They are best used to recover from damage when your health bar is still largely uncorrupted.
  • Medical Supplies (Bandages): These are crucial for corruption management. Using a Medical Supply on yourself or a teammate will restore health AND remove a portion of their current corruption.
    • Strategy: Designate a healer or ensure all players are aware of when to use Medical Supplies to cleanse corruption. Prioritize teammates with high corruption.
• Temporary Health: Generating temporary health (green health) through talents or specific weapon properties can effectively "pad" your health bar, allowing you to absorb damage even with high corruption. However, temporary health does not remove corruption.
• Specific Talents & Abilities: Some careers have talents that can mitigate or cleanse corruption. For example, the Witch Hunter Captain's "Blessed Shots" talent can sometimes remove a small amount of corruption on critical hits, or the Unchained's "Burning Vigor" can reduce corruption taken. Consult the Career Database for specific talents.

Curses and Grimoires

Beyond standard corruption, Grimoires introduce a unique "curse" mechanic. These special tomes, often found in hidden locations on maps, are objectives for increasing your end-of-mission reward quality. However, carrying a Grimoire inflicts a permanent, unremovable corruption on the entire team for the duration of the mission.

Grimoire Mechanics:

• Location: Each mission has two Grimoires, typically hidden off the main path or in secret areas. Refer to our Maps section for precise Grimoire locations on every level.
• Effect: Each Grimoire carried reduces the maximum health of ALL team members by 33%. Carrying both Grimoires reduces maximum health by 66%. This corruption cannot be healed or removed by any means.
• Loss Condition: If a player carrying a Grimoire dies, the Grimoire is dropped. If not picked up within a short time, it will despawn, and the associated health penalty will be removed.
• Strategy:
  • Team Coordination: Decide as a team if you want to attempt Grimoires. On higher difficulties, the health penalty is severe and requires excellent teamwork and damage avoidance.
  • Grimoire Carriers: Assign a durable character, like an Ironbreaker or Foot Knight, to carry Grimoires. They can better withstand the reduced health.
  • Prioritize Survival: With reduced health, avoiding damage becomes paramount. Stick together, manage hordes effectively, and prioritize special enemy elimination.
  • Consider Dropping: If a run is going poorly, or a critical team member is constantly dying due to the health penalty, consider intentionally dropping a Grimoire to regain health. This is often a better option than a full team wipe.

Mastering corruption and curse mechanics is a cornerstone of high-level play in Vermintide 2. By understanding their sources, knowing how to mitigate them, and making informed decisions about Grimoires, you'll significantly increase your chances of survival and success against the Skaven and Chaos hordes.
