Kazuma Kiryu, Haruka Sawamura, Makoto Date, Daigo Dojima, Goro Majima, and Shun Akiyama return in The Lullaby of Life. Learn their backgrounds.

Kazuma Kiryu - The protagonist of The Lullaby of Life series, known as the "Dragon of Dojima." He earned this title by accident during the events of _Yakuza 0_. In _Yakuza 1_, he was an officer in the Tojo Clan but took responsibility for his boss Sohei Dojima's murder. After ten years in prison and expulsion from yakuza life, he returned to uncover a conspiracy involving Haruka and ten billion yen, leading to him being named the Fourth Chairman of the Tojo Clan. He abdicated this position but was repeatedly drawn back into the Tojo Clan's issues over the next four games. He attempted to escape by establishing an orphanage in Okinawa, but his problems followed him. Even living in secret as a taxi driver in Fukuoka did not prevent him from saving the Tojo Clan again. Now, at 48 years old, he is leaving a three-year prison term, hoping to return to a quiet civilian life.

Haruka Sawamura - Currently 20 years old, Haruka is Kiryu's adopted daughter and the biological daughter of Yumi Sawamura. Kiryu first found nine-year-old Haruka in a bar amidst violence, hiding with a pistol. Discovering she had a clue to the missing ten billion yen, Kiryu took her in and eventually adopted her. While not directly involved in yakuza activities and not a fighter, she has faced danger, including kidnappings. She helped Kiryu establish Morning Glory Orphanage in Okinawa. In _Yakuza 5_, a talent agency discovered her and offered her an idol career, provided she cut ties with her criminal caregiver. At the end of _Yakuza 5_, she rejected the idol life, leading to the events of this game.

Makoto Date - A detective with the Tokyo Metropolitan Police. He first met Kiryu in the first game and they assisted each other. Date often serves as Kiryu's link to both the police and civilian life. Although Date left the force in _Yakuza 3_, he returned in _Yakuza 5_ to help Kiryu, his friend from a different walk of life.

Daigo Dojima - The Sixth and current Chairman of the Tojo Clan. Daigo is the son of Sohei Dojima, Kiryu's former boss. In _Yakuza 2_, Kiryu guided Daigo away from a life of aimless decadence to assume his leadership role. Since then, Daigo has strived to maintain the Clan, often requiring Kiryu's assistance, advice, or intervention.

Goro Majima - Known as the "Mad Dog of Shimano," this wild, one-eyed yakuza is a rival and sometimes ally to Kiryu. He is currently the patriarch of the Majima Family. Despite his flamboyant and seemingly unhinged demeanor, Majima is a shrewd leader. Though he often seeks to fight Kiryu, Majima has frequently worked to Kiryu's advantage to help resolve the Tojo Clan's latest predicaments.

Shun Akiyama - Introduced in _Yakuza 4_, Akiyama is a moneylender and owner of Sky Finance, known as the "Lifeline of Kamurocho." He supports businesses he deems worthy with loans lacking collateral, yet manages to stay in business. While generally affable and relaxed, he is keen on maintaining peace in Kamurocho. Though not a yakuza himself, he closely monitors the underworld's activities.
