This Sanctuary is claimed by the Stone Roots Creed. An Alchemist NPC is present, who can transmute items, primarily weapons, into new forms with altered appearance, damage, scaling, and upgrade stats. Transmutation requires specific enemy drops (like Ears and Ashes) and other found items (Amber Idols, Silver Leaf). Note that about half of the upgrades require Amber Idols, which may not be available unless chosen at character creation. Silver Leaf drops from Poison Cytoplasms.
Joining the Stone Roots is not mandatory at this point, but it offers access to poison enchantments/items from a Stone Merchant and is required for a trophy. If you join the Stone Roots for the first time here by taking an oath at the altar, you will earn the trophy The Stone Roots.
Before proceeding to the boss, head back out the left exit. The boss is located above the respawned Bloated Monstrosity. Near the Monstrosity, at the top of wooden stairs by a ladder, is a Poison Cytoplasm. Before climbing the ladder, go right and jump off the platform to land on the Sanctuary roof. Here you will find a chest containing the Leather Set (Armor) and a Gray Pearl.
For the upcoming boss fight, it is highly recommended to have Poison Resistance. Fire, Arcane, and Lightning Resistance will also be helpful. Consider equipping Antidotes and acquiring enchantments like Pitchfire, Stained Pages, or Blessed Pages from merchants. A Stone Guide can be used for fast travel.
For casters, a new casting weapon is not available for some time. However, a staff can be purchased from the Stone Mage Offering for improved spellcasting. The Scrimshaw Cane (a better staff) and the Charged Ring (increases Magic stat, 8000 gold) are available later. Farming may be necessary if you wish to purchase these items.
To face the boss, ascend the ladder previously guarded by the Poison Cytoplasm.
