Your guide to defeating Brock, the Pewter City Gym Leader, in Pokémon Yellow. Learn his Pokémon's weaknesses and the best strategies to earn your first Gym Badge!

Alright, you've made it to Pewter City and it's time to face the first Gym Leader, Brock! He's a Rock-type specialist, so you'll want to have Pokémon that can hit hard against that. Don't worry, we'll get you through this.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Head into the Pewter City Gym. You'll see Brock standing at the far end, ready for a challenge.
  2. 2
Your first opponent will be Brock's Geodude. It's a Rock/Ground type, so Water and Grass moves will be super effective. If you picked Squirtle as your starter, now's your time to shine! If not, try to catch a Mankey or a Nidoran♀ on Route 2 and train them up.
  3. 3
Next up is Brock's ace, Onix. This thing is a beast, especially early on. It's a Rock/Ground type too, so Water and Grass are still your best bet. Onix is slow, so if you have a Pokémon that can outspeed it and hit hard with a super-effective move, you'll be golden. Remember, if your Pokémon faints, you'll have to pay $1,000 to revive them.
Tips
  • If you're having trouble finding a Water or Grass type, consider training up your Pikachu! While not super effective, its Electric-type attacks can still deal decent damage, and it's fast.
  • Don't forget to save your game before entering the Gym! If things go south, you won't lose much progress.
  • If you're really struggling, head back to Route 2 and catch a Mankey. Its Fighting-type moves are strong against Rock types.

Once you defeat Brock, you'll earn the Boulder Badge, which allows you to use the HM move Flash outside of battle. You'll also receive the TM34 (Bide), a move that can be tricky but powerful if used correctly.
