Learn the combat system in One Piece Odyssey. Understand ATK types, areas, turn order, weaknesses, and party switching to defeat enemies effectively.

To start a battle in One Piece Odyssey, walk into a visible enemy. Attacking an enemy from behind grants a combat bonus, allowing you to act first. Conversely, being caught unaware gives enemies the advantage.

Areas

The battle arena is divided into "areas." Your party members can be grouped together or separated. To move to another area, you must defeat the enemies in your current area first. A "Can Move!" icon on a character's portrait indicates they are able to relocate.

Turn Order

You can choose which party member acts first, adding a strategic layer. The turn order of enemies is indicated by a circular arrow around their portrait, divided into four segments. More filled segments mean the enemy will act sooner.

Weakness and ATK Types

Combat uses a rock-paper-scissors mechanic with three ATK Types: Power, Speed, and Technique. Each party member and enemy has one of these types.

  • Power: Red fist icon. Strong against Speed, weak against Technique.
  • Speed: Orange gun icon. Strong against Technique, weak against Power.
  • Technique: Green sword icon. Strong against Power, weak against Speed.

The game indicates weaknesses visually. Red upward arrows next to an enemy's portrait signify that your attack type is strong against them, dealing more damage. Blue downward arrows indicate a weaker attack.

Some enemies are also weak to specific elements like Burn, Freeze, or Lightning. Skills can inflict these elements. Look for "Weak" next to the TP cost of a skill to see if it exploits an elemental weakness.

Party Member Switching

You can switch party members at any time during your turn without losing it. This is useful for exploiting enemy weaknesses, such as switching to Technique-type characters if facing many Power-type enemies. You can only switch if a character is not suffering from a status effect or has not had their health depleted.

Skills

Party members have various skills that consume TP (Technical Points). TP can be replenished by using normal attacks or items like Excite Apples. When hovering over a skill, you can see its power, ATK range (close or long), ATK type, and element.
