Learn the ropes of Jotunnslayer: Hordes of Hel! Master basic gameplay, controls, and essential tips to conquer raids and defeat bosses like a pro.
This page is your go-to guide for getting started in Jotunnslayer: Hordes of Hel. We'll cover the basics of gameplay, how to control your hero, and some handy tips to help you survive the onslaught.
Basic Gameplay
In Jotunnslayer: Hordes of Hel, you'll take your chosen hero on a challenging raid. Your main goal is to complete various objectives, like enduring the winter's curse or taking down powerful lords and champions, all within a strict time limit. Once those objectives are met, you'll summon and face off against the raid's formidable boss.
The game unfolds from an overhead perspective, with waves of enemies constantly swarming towards you. You start with a basic attack and a weapon skill. As you defeat enemies, they'll drop XP crystals. Collecting these will level up your hero, and at each level-up, you'll get to choose a new skill, either offered by a god or from your hero's own potential abilities. By default, skills and attacks are set to autocast, meaning they'll trigger automatically at regular intervals. Your primary role as the player is to control your hero's movement, activate your weapon skill, and perform dashes to evade danger. Passive skills often grant passive bonuses or have a chance to activate when certain conditions are met, such as when your hero takes damage.

Tips and Tricks
- During your raids, you'll have the chance to earn gold and soulstones. These can be spent back at the main menu to buy new weapons for your heroes or to activate virtues. Virtues offer a variety of bonuses and helpful effects. Keep in mind that virtues granted by the gods apply to all your heroes, while hero-specific virtues only benefit that particular hero.
- When a raid concludes, whether you win or lose, you'll see an information screen detailing the DPS (Damage Per Second) of your attacks and autocast skills. It's a smart move to focus on picking up skills that offer high DPS. For example, Thor's skills, Thunderstorm and Sentinel, are excellent choices because they automatically target multiple enemies and deal their full damage potential every time they trigger, assuming enough enemies are in range.
- However, don't get tunnel vision on just high DPS skills. Skills that help clear enemies surrounding you or that can briefly halt an enemy advance are also incredibly valuable. Freya's Divine Wave is a prime example; its outward-spreading waves have a slight knockback effect that can momentarily stop most enemies in their tracks, giving you much-needed breathing room.
