Enhancing your arsenal is crucial for tackling the challenges of Mistria, especially as you delve deeper into areas like The Mines. Weapon upgrades are primarily handled at the Blacksmith's shop, where you can spend Gold and various ore materials to increase a weapon's base damage and unlock its full potential. Early game upgrades might require simple Copper Ore, but as you progress, you'll need rarer materials like Iron Ore and eventually Mistril Ore found in deeper mine levels. Each weapon has a maximum upgrade level, often indicated by a "+X" next to its name. Reaching the highest upgrade tier for a weapon can significantly boost your damage output, making tougher enemies like the Hollow Soldiers more manageable.

Beyond raw upgrades, Fields of Mistria incorporates a rune system that allows for further customization and specialization of your weapons. Runes can be socketed into weapons that have available rune slots. These runes provide several bonuses, such as increased critical hit chance, elemental damage additions (like fire or ice), or even passive effects that trigger on hit. For example, a "Flame Rune" might add 5 fire damage to each attack, while a "Swiftness Rune" could increase your attack speed by 10%. Finding specific runes that synergize with your playstyle or the demands of a particular area, such as equipping a rune that deals extra damage to slimes in the early caves, is key to optimizing your combat effectiveness. Some powerful runes can only be found in specific locations or as rewards for completing difficult requests from the Request Board.

The process of finding and applying runes requires careful consideration. Not all weapons have rune slots, and the number of slots can vary. A common strategy is to prioritize weapons with more slots for your most potent runes. Furthermore, some runes are consumable, meaning they are used up upon application, while others are permanent. Always check the rune's description carefully before using it. For instance, the "Void Rune" found in the deeper levels of The Mines offers a significant boost to damage against void-corrupted enemies but might have a drawback, such as reducing your defense by 5%. Mastering weapon upgrades and rune combinations is essential for overcoming the game's most challenging encounters and contributing to the town's restoration.
