Day 1 - Investigate the Crime Scene

After being awakened by a car sound, press L1 (the button to highlight interactable objects on the minimap (the small circular map in the bottom-left corner of your screen), which is a small map displayed on the HUD (heads-up display — the on-screen icons showing health, ammo and the minimap)) to highlight all interactable items in the room.

Stumble into the bathroom and use the right analog stick to highlight the shirt hanging over the bath. Pick up the White Satin Shirt, which will automatically be equipped into your Shirt slot.

Interact with the mirror above the sink. Wipe the mirror and ignore the warning from your Inland Empire (a skill representing intuition and gut feelings). Touch your features if you like, but wipe the mirror again to reveal your appearance and acquire an avatar. React to your appearance as you wish.

Check for a pulse for +5 XP. Attempt an Encyclopedia (14) check to learn the source of "The Expression".

If you succeed in the Encyclopedia check, you can add +2 to a much more difficult Electrochemistry (19) check.

Identifying the source of "The Expression" unlocks an idea for your Thought Cabinet: Guillaume Le Million. This research takes 4h30, gives a -1 Logic bonus, and grants +1 Pain Threshold and +1 learning cap to all PSY skills.

Warning: Before interacting with the ceiling fan, quick save. Pull on the fan to make the Savoir Faire (11) check significantly easier.

Grab the Horrific Necktie from the fan blades. Pick up the Disco-Ass Blazer from the sofa and the Flare-Cut Trousers from the floor.

When you pick up the trousers, you will find the key to your room in the pocket.

Search the floor near the reel-to-reel tape player for an Empty Cassette Case. This item only shows up if you have Perception 3.

Retrieve a Green Shoe (Left Foot) from the coat hooks on the wall.

Warning: Before investigating the broken window, quick save. Make a Visual Calculus (10) check to learn that the window was broken from the inside.

Check your hands and assess the size of the impact to realize the hole was made by your other shoe. Select "I should go and get that shoe" to initiate the task Find your other shoe (+5 XP).

Head outside and speak to Klaasje, the young woman smoking on the balcony. When she explains you are a police officer, select "God damn right...".

During the conversation, you can try propositioning her. Your earlier response makes a disastrous failure less likely, and you get an additional bonus if you were able to remove the leer from your face.

Before she leaves, ask her questions to learn where you are (Revachol). Ask whether she heard anything and pursue the conversation to ask about the empty cassette case you found (+5 XP).

After Klaasje goes into her room, examine the calendar on the wall and note the month and year (March '51).

Backtrack along the balcony and search the counter for 0.34 reál. Head out through the nearby door to the outside of the hotel.

You will find your other shoe outside the broken window. Pick it up to obtain a pair of Green Snakeskin Shoes.

Click on the yellow thought orb that appears for 15 XP. If you selected Hardcore mode before starting the game, you will unlock the Venture into the Hardcore trophy at this point.

Head back inside and go downstairs to the lobby.

Inspect the music stand, microphone, and speaker next to the cafeteria counter. Click on the purple thought bubble to have your Inland Empire suggest you should make yourself heard.

Explore the thought to initiate the task Sing Karaoke.

Speak to Garte, the Cafeteria Manager. If you make an easy Empathy check, you will figure out he is not a fan of yours. You won't get much from him now.

Search the table with the water cooler to find some Nosaphed, an item that restores health. The '+' above your health bar on the HUD will become active. Use a healing item by pressing the corresponding arrow key.

Check other items in the lobby, particularly the two locked doors.

Ignore the old lady in the wheelchair for now. Speak to Kim Kitsuragi, the man in the orange jacket.

After shaking his hand, he waits for you to introduce yourself, and you realize you don't know your name. If you fail the Conceptualization (11) check, you will make up a nonsense name: Raphaël Ambrosius Costeau. If you use this name and introduce yourself as Detective Costeau, you will eventually unlock the Detective Costeau thought.

Exhaust Kim's conversation options to unlock two new tasks: Interview cafeteria manager and Inspect victim's body.

Kim will ask if you have a badge. You don't, initiating the task Report your badge missing.

Speak to Kim again. Ask about the case and why cops from two precincts are assigned to it to unlock The pissing competition.

Get Kim to brief you on the case (+15 XP). Tell him you can't remember anything and lack basic information to initiate End-of-day debrief with Kim.

Tell him this is a medical situation, you had no idea who you were when you looked in the mirror, and insist major brain damage has occurred to initiate Call your station's lazareth.

There is a sleeping dockworker slumped over the counter. Ignore him for now. Interact with the spilt bottle of rum on the table next to him and click on the Electrochemistry thought bubble.

Explore the thought to initiate the task Find booze and drink it.

Goodest of the Good Cops: Resist the temptation to lick up the spilt booze.

Afterwards, speak to Kim again.
