Cultists are useful in the early game for capturing Strategic Points, but their utility diminishes afterward.

Chaos Space Marines have fewer weapon upgrade options than their counterparts; Heavy Bolters are recommended, and in large numbers, they are devastating against infantry, vehicles, and buildings.

Chaos Space Marines can now infiltrate, and combined with new rules allowing concealed units to attack, they become quite dangerous. A few squads with Heavy Bolters that the enemy cannot detect without specific units can execute a disturbingly powerful stealth attack.

Raptors and Khorne Berzerkers form a strong core for a melee-focused army due to their speed, enabling rapid assaults.

Possessed Marines are limited to one squad but remain very powerful when supported by other melee squads, provided they are upgraded.

The Daemon Prince, a new Chaos Space Marine unit, is powerful and adds significant punch but will be outclassed if not supported. To unlock the Daemon Prince, you need all other wargear, meaning it will be late in the campaign before you can use this unit.

Defilers serve as good melee support units. For ranged support, use Predators upgraded to engage vehicles and buildings; they will still be somewhat effective against infantry.
