Learn to exploit environmental hazards and opportunities in The Surge 2. Survive Jericho City by mastering interactions with electrified water and circuits.

Jericho City is a dangerous place, and not just because of the rampaging nanite-infected citizens and rogue machines. The environment itself presents numerous challenges, but also hidden advantages if you know how to exploit them. Mastering these environmental interactions is key to survival and efficient progression.

Electrified Water & Circuits

Throughout Jericho City, you'll encounter areas with standing water that can become electrified. This is a significant hazard, but also a potent weapon against your foes.

• Identification: Look for shimmering water puddles or submerged pathways. Often, you'll see exposed electrical conduits or sparking machinery nearby.
• Hazard Avoidance:
  • Jumping: The most straightforward method is to jump over electrified sections. Your character's jump height is sufficient for most puddles.
  • High Ground: Always prioritize moving to higher, dry ground if a fight breaks out in an electrified area.
  • Disabling Power: In some instances, you can temporarily or permanently disable the power source. For example, in the Downtown Jericho area near the Downtown MedBay, a sparking transformer can be destroyed to de-electrify a large puddle, granting access to a hidden Advanced Tech Scrap cache.
• Offensive Opportunities:
  • Luring Enemies: If you're facing melee-focused enemies, try to lure them into electrified water. A single shock can stun them, opening them up for a powerful combo or execution. This is particularly effective against the Scavenger Drones in the Port Nixon area.
  • Ranged Attacks: If you have a ranged weapon like the Ranger Drone, you can shoot enemies while they are standing in electrified water for bonus damage and status effects.
  • Environmental Traps: Certain areas, like the flooded underpass leading to the Delver boss arena, feature controllable power conduits. Activating these at the right moment can electrocute multiple enemies simultaneously, clearing a path or softening up tougher foes.

Toxic Sludge & Gas Vents

Toxic environments are prevalent in industrial zones and areas affected by nanite outbreaks. These can quickly drain your health or inflict debilitating status effects.

• Identification: Toxic sludge appears as glowing green or purple pools. Gas vents emit visible clouds of noxious fumes.
• Hazard Avoidance:
  • Dash/Jump: Most toxic puddles can be quickly traversed with a dash or a well-timed jump. Prolonged exposure is the real danger.
  • Resistances: Equip implants like the Toxic Resistance Regulator or armor sets with high toxic defense, such as the Rhino Set, before entering heavily contaminated zones.
  • Shutting Off Vents: In some cases, you can interact with valves or control panels to temporarily or permanently seal off gas vents. For example, in the Gideon's Rock research facility, a series of valves must be turned to clear a path through a toxic laboratory, leading to the blueprint for the Toxic Glaive.
• Offensive Opportunities:
  • Corrosive Damage: Enemies standing in toxic sludge or gas will take continuous corrosive damage. This is particularly useful against heavily armored opponents who are slow to move out of the affected area.
  • Luring & Trapping: Similar to electrified water, lure enemies into toxic zones. The Toxic Drones often patrol these areas and are vulnerable to their own element if you can maneuver them correctly.

Explosive Barrels & Containers

Red barrels and various volatile containers are scattered throughout the environments. These are your best friends for crowd control and dealing burst damage.

• Identification: Look for bright red barrels, gas canisters, or other clearly marked explosive containers.
• Hazard Avoidance:
  • Distance: Maintain a safe distance when enemies are near these objects, especially if they have ranged attacks.
  • Controlled Detonation: If you need to pass an area with explosives, consider detonating them safely from a distance with a ranged weapon or a thrown Frag Grenade.
• Offensive Opportunities:
  • Area of Effect Damage: A single explosion can damage or even instantly kill multiple weaker enemies. This is invaluable when dealing with groups of Nanite Cultists or CREO Workers.
  • Staggering Tougher Foes: Even larger enemies like the Heavy Duty Mech can be staggered by an explosion, creating an opening for a powerful attack or a limb-targeting opportunity.
  • Environmental Chain Reactions: In areas like the CREO Institute of Technology, you'll find multiple explosive containers clustered together. A single well-placed shot can trigger a devastating chain reaction, clearing entire rooms.

High Ledges & Gravity

Gravity is a constant threat, but also a strategic tool. Falling from great heights is instantly fatal, but it can be equally fatal for your enemies.

• Identification: Any significant drop-off or open pit.
• Hazard Avoidance:
  • Careful Movement: Always be mindful of your surroundings, especially during combat. Dodging backwards near an edge can be deadly.
  • Platforming: Some areas require precise platforming. Take your time and observe enemy patrol patterns before attempting risky jumps.
• Offensive Opportunities:
  • Pushing Enemies: Many enemies, especially humanoid ones, can be knocked off ledges to their instant demise. Weapons with high impact, like the Impact Hammer, or certain implants that boost impact damage, are excellent for this. The narrow walkways in the Cathedral of the Spark are perfect for this strategy.
  • Luring & Trapping: Position yourself near a ledge and bait enemies into charging you. A quick sidestep or dodge can send them plummeting.
  • Vertical Ambush: Sometimes, you can drop down onto unsuspecting enemies from above, initiating combat with a powerful plunge attack. Look for these opportunities in multi-level areas like the Cloud 9 Bar.
